Brute grew impatient as Gizmo and Killian argued back and forth, but he knew that Ivan's future lay at state.
Still he couldn't help but think of Roadrunner who even now was moving increasingly away with Cadian. But to where and why?
Ivan seemed bored as he watched the argument between the two lord of Junktown. It was becoming increasingly clear to all that eventually only one of them would have to go, and that one would probably go violently.
"You're saying that one of our guards got killed because of the Hub?" Demanded Killian.
"I am telling you that your guard was in the pay of the Hub. Yes, and you and your damn guards were blind to not see it." Said Gizmo.
"My guards keep this town safe." Replied Killian, "So you can make your money."
"We both make our money because of those guards, but we both make our money because we've been too small for the Hub to notice. We've been living off them like leaches. We even use their caps for money." Said Gizmo, who seemed to have grown tired."What I am telling you is that they let us because we were too small and they were to busy. But we're not so small now."
"You're saying that because you know they want to make a deal with me and that eventually you'd be cut out." Said Killian.
"You're a fool. More business with the Hub, more caravans is good for me. More caravans means more cash, and that cash gets spent gambling in my casino, gets drunk with my booze, and gets spent on the pussy that I own." Said Gizmo who took a seat because the argument seemed to have drained him.
"So you have more to gain then." Said Killian.
"If the Hub didn't plan to whack me in the process. YOu don't get it. They don't want to do business with you, they want to own you. And they will own me to."
Killian didn't seem convinced. He had been doing business with the Hub for a few months and their envoys had seemed to negotiate in good faith.
Gizmo shook his head."They were going to whack the nuke cola peddler because they wanted to buy him out of the Hub. They knew he'd come here because we have water too. His water means he can stay in business without the Hub and that means competition."
"So they sent a team to kill him to keep him out of business. What does that have to do with us?"
"First it breaks our rules. If they whack the cola peddler it means no one can do business here that's independent of them. They know that. So why not finish up. We're small time Killian. But big enough and will get bigger. The Hub can't allow that." Gizmo tried to explain.
"But why would they try to kill you." Asked Killian.
"Because there's a man down in the Hub called Decker that wants me gone. I'm also a small fry but our business competes. He's already got his connections here. Morbid for one." Explained Gizmo. "And if Decker didn't want me killed he'd put me to work for him, which means scamming off the Hub, and the Hub merchants don't want Decker's kind of interests here."
Killian shook his head. He'd been the sherriff of Junktown long enough to know that it was better to not watch Gizmo's business to closely. "Gizmo, if you have competition that wants you dead, that's your problem."
"Maybe, but if you stayed in Junktown you'd be an added cost to the Hub. A cost they don't need and can easily get rid of." Said Gizmo. "That's why they want us both dead. Because its better business that way."
"You've got proof." Asked Killian.
Gizmo nodded. "Ask the whores."
One by one the prostitutes told Killian of what the Rovers had been there to do. They told that the Rovers had been hired to get rid of the peddler and then to take out Gizmo then Killian, in that order. Meanwhile the Hub merchants would slowly take over business. Once the prostitutes had spoken, Killian turned his attention to the Rover survivor.
The survivor knew that the evidence was against him, but still swore he wouldn't speak. When Killian promised him clemency and a way out of town, the man seemed unconvinced. "Otherwise we hang you in the morning." Said Killian.
That seemed to convince the Rover who said that what had been said was true. The Hub merchants were plotting a takeover of Junktown.
"And these people?" Asked Killian pointing to Ivan, Brute and the others.
"They were with the peddler's family. We figured they were guards and we got paid extra for them."
"So you fired in self-defense?" Asked Killian of Ivan.
"That's what I said earlier."
Killian shook his head. His confidence had been shaken. People were willing to kill him now and he was suddenly without few friends. Certainly Gizmo didn't trust his judgment, and he couldn't fully trust Gizmo. Both men were subject to influence from others outside of Junktown that would have jeopardized any friendship or partnership the two men might have been able to sustain.
'Alright then. Ivan, you can go."
One of the guards cut the bonds around Ivans hands and he rejoined his friends.
Killian looked over at Gizmo. "I appreciate what you telling me, but I guess you know I can't trust you no more."
"Nor I can trust you, Killian." Said Gizmo as he headed out the door.
"This town is to small." Said Killian.
"And yet neither of us can walk away from it." Said Gizmo who quietly walked away, followed by his bodyguard.
"And you boys?" Asked Killian.
"One of our party has been abducted. It's time to get her back." Said Brute.
