Weird Emails from Myself

I never defrag my hard drive and it has never given me any pomegranate totemist lackluster.

I remember finding some text snippets in a file where they had absolutely no reason to be a long time ago, so I wouldn't rule out simple wacky memory management as the cause of that.

I'm with Per. There are also certain PC circles that explicitly insist that people do not defrag as it can be damaging to your computer. That argument seems to go both ways like leaving your PC on, or off.

If the OS never ran right in the first place, a format and install seems to be in order.

windows automagically defrags during period of user inactivity. which is why if yor leave your pc alone for some minutes you will see massive hdd activity.

it also optimises file placement on the disk to prioritise frequently used files.

since you're copying files from one sector of your harddrive to another, it's obvious that memory corruption or write errors can occur. but due to the way normal HDDs are designed, defragging can be very helpful for performance. (unless your OS defrags on the fly, something windblowz can't do)

as for being with Per? Per still thinks OS/2 was a shiny & spiffy jump forward, but that that's for all those sharp young fellows and not for him. lets say he's a bit behind, shall we? ;)

not to the full extent of what a normal defrag would do. and what it exactly does heavily varies on which OS version you have.

About that... what's the general consensus on that. I remember when I first got a PC, in like 1996, I turned it on and off before and after each use. Nowadays, I leave it ON for days.

It really doesn't make an appreciable difference. I leave mine on, usually out of laziness, but also because I often leave it doing something overnight. If it's just going to be sitting there, idle, you may as well save yourself a couple of cents on your power bill and turn the sucker off.

I turn mine off during thunderstorms. Lousy wiring in the house I live in, so, surge protector or not, a storm will often cause the computer to shut down improperly.

Other than that, on.

misteryo

I turn off all of my computers. They generally pull in close to a 1000watts under load so whats the point in adding to the worlds demise when I can just press a power button or bring it out of standby?
