It Wandered In From the Wastes
Hello, artists of NMA. I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this, but I have always wanted to design some post-apoc styled characters, towns, ect.

But I just don't know how things would look. Like with limited tools, how can a wall be built, or a house? Out of junk, sure but how does it all stay together? Same for armor or weapons, it's not like there's glue or welding tools (or are there?) in the post-apocalyptic life that I know of.

I tried looking at things like the Mad-Max movies and obviously the Fallout games as reference, but I just don't know how it... works I suppose. There isn't much on google that I could find.

Can anyone help me out with this? I'm so intrigued by this sort of thing and I just lack the knowledge of how life would be like or something.

Just look at the shantytowns of Mumbai, and presto! Junktown!

Also have a look in the gallery here at NMA, and browse the various artists that post here.

Lots of good stuff to be found.

Also, like Wooz said - just find photos from slum areas around the world - people make do with the simplest things and are inventive as hell when they have to be :)

As others have said, the third world always offers examples.

Here is stuff I have in my game:
I would also look into repairs of existing homes and or buildings.

If you cant put new shingles on a house, then you may have to cover it with something else.... shingles made from the tread of old car tires or shingles made from aluminum soda cans which have the ends taken off and are cut and flattened out.

Walls could be build from 2 liter or other sized bottles filled with sand or mud and then laid like bricks.

Metal shipping containers or semi trailers could be used as homes as well (there is a photo essay of this sort of thing and someone here at NMA linked to it).

People always reuse bricks. Why not take bricks from abandoned houses and re use them. Dry cement or mortar would probably be available (there are cement yards/ factories all over) or possibly mud or clay as mortar. New homes would be smaller, but who cares?

if you have a lot of people hanging around, why not use old cars to build homes? crush the roofs down (or cut them off), stack the cars like bricks and fill the interior with rocks. Repeat and fill holes with small rocks and mud as mortar.

shelters shacks and shanties by Beard is a good reference too (but a bit old).

Feel free to contact me and I can do some sketches if you need them (I am a terrible artist)
