what books/mags/buffs are perma and which are temp?

First time out of the vault
i'm enjoying this game immensly (spelling) but i'm curious which items are perma boosts? i'm a wierd type of player, i'm a completionist and i'm also a packrat, the one thing i normally sell a lot of are consumables in most games. i will almost never use up a temp boost for any reason, with the exception of health potions or whatever they're called in this game.

i'm asking this question 'cause i read some magazines and books i had in my inventory but was suprised to find those buffs disappear soon after.

i hear talk in these forums about skill books, are these different than what i found in the doc's house?, also is there any use for all those burned out books/destroyed books and such, or are those all vendor trash?

i am all for crafting though, repair as well, so i like all the different junk that i can break apart and make new things with.

(also, a side question not in the title.....i hear people talking about breaking down ammunition & making new ammo, isn't there a loss in components when this is done?, ie break down (10) 9mm rounds, then put them back together will only get you like 4 or 5 rounds?)

thanks again :)

is there anything else in the game that's permanant, ie drugs, edibles, (or is there a way to tell what's perm & what's temporary by the effects description?)

The idea is that you don't break down ammo to make the same rounds, you break it down to make different ammo which has a different cost. I don't think you loose any lead/powder/primers/casings just from breaking stuff down, unless maybe your repair skill is really low.

The only items in the game that permanently boost your stats are skill books, everything else is temporary. When crafting ammo you don't really lose any components, you might get fewer rounds because that's a more powerful/expensive/rare ammo type than the type you broke down.

If an item in your inventory is listed with some kind of stat/skill bonus, it's either wearable (granting the bonus while equipped) or consumable (offering a temporary bonus after ingested). The difference between skill books and skill magazines can be a bit tricky, because most of the skill "books" are, strictly speaking, magazines (e.g. Grognak the Barbarian) and look similiar to a skill magazine when found lying around. Unlike skill magazines they don't show up with any bonus in your inventory, and they are easily distringuishable from 'clutter' books because they have an actual title instead of being named large burned book or pre-war book or something.

Short answer, the permanent stuff doesn't actually have an effect description.

How I recognize skill books: They don't have any effect entry in the item effects list. So scroll through your inventory in the Aid-tab and check for everything that has no effect text. These are either quest items (very unlikely because it would be in the Misc-tab then) or something that boosts a stat of you permanently.

/edit: Just saw that it was written already. Oh well. :p

Actually you lose a bit of lead and powder when breaking down ammo. For example if you break down a .308 round you obtain:

Case .308
Lead (15)
Powder rifle (4)
Primer large rifle

But to craft it back together you need:

Case .308
Lead (17)
Powder rifle (5)
Primer large rifle

An easier way to tell wich one is a permanent Buff and wich is temproal while picking them up is that SKill Books (the permanent ones) weight 2 pounds, while magazines are weightless.

EXCELLENT ADVICE everyone, i love how helpfull everyone is, perfect answers to my questions, thank you, i have a couple more if ya'll don't mind?

1. since i don't plan on using any drugs, is it possible to break these down or do they become vendor trash for me?, i'm still in the main city and overloaded lol. i'm not even stealing from people :) (i'm curious because the workbench next to the salon doesn't seem to have very many recipes available, is that the full list of things i can make?)

and 2. i'm really looking forward to this crafting system, i can't wait to melt down the tin cans for scrap, break down the empty bottles, see what i can use the paper from the pre-war books for, and stuff like that. the problem i have is part of question 1 i guess, i'm not 100% sure i'll ever be able to scrap any of this stuff to play around with crafting or if it's totally junk and vendor trash.
please, please, i know it's probably not worth the effort to gather/scrap stuff, but it's the type of game i like to play, at least as long as i am even able to scrap them, i'm suspecting it must be possible at some point because of the picture for these things,

thanks :), any help/advice is appreciated as usual.

Drugs and other things are crafted in the campfire, liek they tell you in the tutorial, just browse the lists onm each crafting terminal (reloading benches, workbenches, campfires) and it lists the required skill level and ingredients, it's pretty basic stuff they explain to you in the begining of the game.

1. You can't break down drugs, but you can use some of them as ingredients to craft more powerful ones. If you don't intend to use them (they can be damn useful though) they're still useful for a few quests, but most can be safely sold. Unless you're short on cash I'd recommend you keep at least a few of each though, since they're weightless.

Crafting is done at the workbench, reloading bench and campfire. Most of the recipes for each are available from the start, but certain schematics can be found throughout the wasteland, and other recipes are unlocked by selecting special perks. The DLCs also add a few recipes each.

2. Much of the stuff you find lying around is useless junk and can't be used to craft anything. Many other items are used in certain more or less useful recipes, but available in such large numbers that most of it should be left alone. It's essentially there for flavour, most of it fairly worthless in trade (or too heavy to be convenient). Check the available recipes for an indication of what you should leave behind and what you should gather. For example, I always collect the ingredients for a weapon repair kit- a very useful item- when I come across them: scrap metal, scrap electronics, duct tape, wrenches and wonderglue. Burned books, on the other hand, I always leave behind, as they're worthless for trade and not used in any crafting.

OH SNAP, thank you for this comment, it sounds like i can't break down the "tin cans" and such for more basic components to be used in something usefull?

it seems i should be able to at least get scrap metal for it, oh whell.

so basically, i have most recipies at the workbench/campfire/reload station, and as i browse through those recipies if i don't see an item (ingredient) in there then it's vendor junk correct?

Well, it could be a part of a recipe you acquire later. Tin cans, for example are used in at least one recipe I know of that you can acquire, though they're so abundant that you don't need to worry about storing them for later.

I'd classify most of the clutter lying around as simply junk rather than vendor junk, as hauling it off to sell is pretty pointless due to its low value.

The Honest Hearts DLC (I think) introduces recipes for breaking down various clutter into scrap metal, not that I've ever used them myself.

HH adds those recipes. Dead Money adds stuff that is pretty much primarily useful in Dead Money.

They're kinda useful if you can't find a scrap metal and need one, but not really.
