What do you want to see in an RPG

apologies mods if this is in the wrong section, please move as necessary.

Just curious as to what features/style/setting/gameplay/mechanics/etc that most people would wish to see in a post apoc game.

i'm considering drafting a design doc in conjunction with some writers, and before i get off my butt and actually do anything, i'd like to hear what people would like to see in a future post apoc release

so, what would you like to see in future POST APOC RPG RELEASES?

Originality in setting and quest design.
Quality in writing.
Direction in art and overall feel.

cool. thanks for the post :) when you say originality in setting, thats a fair call and something that i think most people enjoy, but what possible aspects would you consider to be flatout unoriginal?
like for example.. if someone is making a post apoc game.. and they have like lots of desert areas and what not, its it unoriginal because wasteland and fallout did it? or acceptable because it might be semi-realistic/realistic.

What I would say would be unoriginal would be the "go here, kill this guy(s), get xp!!!111!!!" quests. Especially if it makes up the majority of the main quest. *cough* Oblivion *cough*

Amongst others, but that's one of my biggest gripes, unless it doesn't repeat itself constantly. *cough* Oblivion *cough*

The last thing you, or anyone else, wants to do is be original for the sake of being original. Can't think of anything original for the setting? Then don't do anything original. Forcing it is the worst way in or out.

And post-apocalyptic has certain requisite. Wasteland tends to be one of them, that has little to do with originality.

Originality in quests is more important, tho', if you want to stand out.

ok cool.

both great responses.

paladin solo - yeah i hated that about oblivion and morrowind as well. its there reason i never finished oblivion. it got so damn boring.

brother none, i also really like your response... its a tried and true kinda principle that even works on an interpersonal level... no one likes someone whose trying to be something they're not, or trying to be something "different" to be cool.

i will ask, however, could you please (coz i cant think of any) give me a couple of examples of games that have done this and been crap or failed because of it? it'd be really good to have some tangible reference points.

thanks.

I want a world I can become immersed in, and explore to my heart's desire. I want to be able to spend years and years playing, yet not seeing the entire game. I want dialog so sharp you could shave a deathclaw with it. Originality is great, but I don't really mind old genres or settings if they are done very well.

You should tell Beth about it. The O.Q.D. System! Now quick, someone find a new animal and name it an Oqd.
