I think The Institute is a interesting concept, but it was done in an horrible way. They are just... boring and stupid. They aren't crazy wacky like the Think Tank, they don't have an interesting plan for the wasteland. They are pretty much a bunch of scientists experiment on the wasteland and making sure the Commonwealth can't get its shit together and kill them, because the Institute keeps messing with the Commonwealth and giving them good reason to kill them.
I think it shows how badly-done it is, when The Institute straight out creates life-extending, body-enhancing cybernetics and... just shuts the whole thing down and their leader chooses to die of cancer rather than turning into a cyborg, even through his organization probably has enough technology to create perfect small implants that would barely affect his daily life... just because he doesn't like the idea of being part-machine.
It also speaks of how stupid it is, when the Institute creates perfect replicas of human beings, and then vehemently denies that their perfect artificial human beings are actual intelligent beings, even through they are perfect human replicas.
"Humanity Redefined" could have been an interesting transhuman concept, and they could have exploited the blurring line and blending between Man and Machine, the birth of a new race. Instead, we got... whatever it was.
