What stuff should not have made it into Tactics?

As you said yourself, fusion power was well known in the 50s, so it was pretty easy for them to imagine that some day it could be controlled. On the other hand, it would be hard for a sci-fi author to imagine something like transistors before they were created.

Yet we can imagine quantum computers, which aren't exactly an established technology yet.

The transistor was invented in 1947, any well-informed science fiction author could've imagined it's uses. Maybe it just wasn't used. Or maybe it was, but was later replaced by something new, requiring huge computers (I'm not saying company servers today are tiny).

Well, the Fallout universe could have diverged before 1947 and the transistors might have never been invented, so there would be no "well-informed science fiction authors".

If it had diverged that much before 1947 there probably wouldn't be a significant nuclear arsenal. Same with fusion power.

Why? They'd have plenty of time to develop a significant nuclear arsenal between 1947 and 2077. And it's easier to imagine "atom bomb, only stronger" when you've already seen one than something like transistors if they have never been invented.

So they would blow up China, not Alaska. I was referring to the fact that you stated that China was invading the West coast of the US in 2077, which isn't true. Most of US troops were stationed in China at that time (Sadly, the Americans bombed their own troops).

No, no. They would nuke the area they were intending to invade again. Even if they just wanted to stop the invasion, they would have hit places on the west coast and Alaska where military forces would be moving through to get to ports or up the coast to Alaska. They wouldn't just hit one button that would nukzor the entire world because they felt like it, they would be smart and limit nuclear deployment at first. Not everyone's a madman.

So by your reasoning, they still have WW1 and Civil war equipment today, just in case they need it. If it kills, it works. Why not just equip your army with shovels?

You know, apart from selling the shermans to collectors or museums, they could turn it into scrap metal.

No because that's asinine. Obviously muskets aren't of any use in 2005 even but up until 1900, there still would have been a lot of them around and you can arm civilians with them who already hunt with the damn things. Not everyone had the money to buy Winchesters and Colt Peacemakers to run around with. Same goes for WWI equipment, a lot of it was still in use at the outbreak of WWII and even after that because there was nothing physically wrong with it. Shermans were kept for a long time in reserve for the US and the Israelis and other nations used them for a very long time and upgraded them. I'm not saying WWI, WWII, or "real" weapons should BE in the games. I'm simply pointing out that you don't just ditch and burn equipment because you have your shiny new toys. - Colt

I thought you meant the US. China would still probably use nuclear weapons on their own territory, since that's where many US troops were.

I doubt they would want to use Shermans or any WW2 equipment that actually consumes fuel at such an amazing rate, when they are having an energy crisis. In fact, they wouldn't even be able to use them. I doubt they would even want to use the Sherman today, with modern anti-tank weapons and all. It's a deathtrap, especially as the machinery might be too old to function properly.

Right B., Shernans are'nt the toughest tank available...

According to my grandpa, during the time he served in People's Polish Army, during combat exercises they had to fill the Shermans with concrete to make them last longer, as usually one blast from tank cannon was ripping them apart.

That's a very good point, machinery, especially motors (and american/english motors are worst) that stands still for a long time stops working, it corrodes and other unpleasant things.
The only way you could keep it in good condition for more than ten years without using it regularlywould be to pick every single part away from the other and soak it in grease, and then putting the thing together when you want to use it...So basically a vehicle is more damaged by standing still for a ten years than being moderately used(with reasonable care) for ten years.

This discussion has clearly gotten out of hand. I mean, listen to yourself guys... Fallout Tactics is a game! So is Fallout, and Fallout 2. It's fictional. It's entertaining. It's conceivable. But by definition it’s not plausible. So it’s superfluous to attempt to prove otherwise. Gees. Leave it at that, will ya.

Yes Max, but discussing is a skill every homo sapiens posseses, and must practice it.

Dammit, and why do I get 'Troll alert' going off near your post?

Max, what have I told you? Don't be so condescending to a fellow Slav, and a furry at that :D

Are all of you dumbasses missing the point? Neither the Jeep nor the Hummer or the tank should have made it into the game. Does anyone even realize the Great war took place in 2077? That they might have been slightly more technologically advanced than a Jeep, OR a Hummer? Even a tank like the one in FoT is completely outdated. Like these remarks:

There is a note in the beginning of the Bible that dictates the fallout timeline to be completely seperated from any semblance of a real timeline. So perhaps in the fallout dimension they completely bypassed the invention of the Jeep and went straight to Humvee production.

Hell, I would doubt there were even the World Wars...

Nuff said.

And the changed flag is no evidence for earlier divergence. The states could have been joined into the 11 zones somewhere between WW2 and the Great War.
