While the anime of Fairy Tail isn't better than absolutely anything in the shonen scene, you CANNOT deny that it has an amazing soundtrack.
The author was even more inspired than in Naruto's OST. The only nit it has is that sometimes some accords repeat too often, and that's becouse usually those bolong to character's, situations or the show's leimotifs.
Otherwise the animation was pretty shoddy at the start (eventhough most Shonen anime share this) and not very detailed. The style was meh and me neither have ever gotten a grip on it. Although this anime isn't near as influential as One Piece, which casts a complete shadow over Fairy Tail due to style similarities.
As for the manga, all the actually funny comedy that was lost in the anime adaptation is here. The argument is better explained and the style of drawing is pretty great in the "past generation" shonen way.
The series as a whole it's a lot like AMC's The Walking Dead for me. I know that the plot and characters aren't the best (the lore does make sense tho), but i have seen it for such a long time and it has a lot of redeeming qualities that it's a not-guilty pleasure. Putting the soundtrack on and reading the manga is the way to go imo.
