It's a close make to numerous gas masks developed at the time and previous (some WWI influences, perhaps), plus the helmet part resembles a bit of the robby-style robots.

Notice the visor shape, the style of the large hoses (used quite a bit in that time-frame for flexibility and hose integrity - now they use flexible wire-reinforced hoses today for the same purpose). The other parts of the suit are reminiscent to science pulps back then, and also tech they used back then.
MicroForte's only "50's influence" is putting up posters from that time and taking Euro gun models from that time - which doesn't cut it by a longshot. Their armors belong in Predator or Baldur's Gate. The biggest Mad Max/Road Warrior reference, the leather armor, they threw out and pulled something from Baldur's Gate.

Sounds like you've been given some shit by the Interplay shovel. Fallout is not mean to be "futuristic, crude, and dirty" (they know who they are, I wonder if the role they played with the original Fallout was kind of like Feargus' role with BIS now - local spin-doctor - they sure as hell don't seem to have a clue as to what makes up Fallout). It's supposed to have a definite connection the the Cuban Missile Crisis and Nuke Scare era. That's the whole novelty of the game, a wasteland that has a definite connection to another time when nuclear war played a definite part in the lives of numerous USAnians. Retro science fiction, is the theme, which explains why the robots look why they do in the original game, the armors look the way they do, and so many other things. The cigar-shaped floating bots, the robby security bots, etc. Plus the scenery was done the same way. FOT backpedalled when Interplay and Co. found they couldn't shovel "it has a fururistic and dark, gritty look" down the throats of the fans that have been with the series, then they added a few more things in to try and make it excusable. But it still missed the mark.

You might want to look at the properties of the pictures (kind of show up as green dots) in new windows, as they got messed up when they recompiled their news. Or you can look through the source and find where it has like two paragraph breaks and then go from there. Like this one.

"Naaaah, that leather armor doesn't have anything to do with Fallout.
Let's throw it out and take something from Baldur's Gate."
