Which game did Companions the best?

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
Which game do you guys think did Companions the best? Fallout 1, Fallout 2, or Fallout: New Vegas? Or, if you liked different aspects from each, tell me what you liked?

Personally, I think the companions in Fallout 2 were the most interesting and unique (even though 1 had Dogmeat). I mean, where else can you walk around with a Bone-nose tribal, Old Wise-Cracking Marksman, Giant Supermutant, Giant TALKING deathclaw, fat trader, and cybernetic dog? (<That’s literally my team right now! Yes I have 6 companions)

Fallout 1’s companions, on the other hand, while classic in their own right, are much more “down to earth” with 3 regular humans and 1 regular dogmeat.

Fallout New Vegas’s system of one normal companion and one pet companion was kinda lame. I love just walking around with a diverse set of NPCs and kicking ass with them.

What do you all think?

Fallout 1.5: Resurrection.

It doesn't have a big cast (3 humans- good, neutral and evil, dog and a secret companion), but each is really fleshed out.

Each companion has unique interactions with other NPCs, opinions about the quests you've accepted and how you should complete them and sometimes even open completely different routes.

Fallout 2 definitely had the best cast of companions, but I feel New Vegas had the best system. I'm not a fan of just 1 companion and an animal/robot, but each companion in the game was written as well as they could've whereas in Fallout 2, quite a few of them were just really bland and some were there for gags. And in New Vegas each companion had their own quest and likes/dislikes. You can upgrade each companion through their quest, and while some companion quests feel unfinished, (Lily, Rex, ED-E,) at least they have something.

Also the Fallout 1 companions were so bland. One is just a walking Wasteland reference, another is there for diversity, then the dog's there because of course there would be a dog in post-nuclear setting. Ian is the companion with the most character, but even Davin in Fallout 2 had more character than Ian.

(off-topic) Remember your companion head cannon post yesterday? Well I just had a good idea. In NCR, Doc Henry should be able to update Lenny with cybernetic implants, making him equal to the rest of the team as a great fighter! just a plus +2 too his strength and agility would be nice

Maybe, although Lenny is a ghoul and not a cyberdog, which is what Henry specializes in.

Vegas had the best companions by a longshot in that they felt like actual characters with lives and beliefs that existed beyond being "party member". It's not to imply 1 or 2 had two dimensional or poor followers but none came close to Arcade, Veronica, Cass et cetera in terms of storytelling.

Mechanically the Vegas system is lacking however. It needed some tweaks. Halving the damage taken and also dealt by companions, whilst also making the number of companions using the Fallout 2 formula of CHAR/2 to give that stat some sensible utility.

On top of the Vegas NPCs being fleshed out people of their own, I also enjoy the way that most of them played a part in representing specific aspects of the worldbuilding. Veronica is a great way to represent the Brotherhood and it's issues, Cass and Boone for NCR and Arcade for the Followers and the Enclave. Their personal branching endings are the cherry on top.
