Who can touch-type?

Thats useless

Unless you are a secretary(with isn't my case) its useless
Just an exibition, and with these new voices recognizers softwares we can write texts with an microfone faster than a lot of good secretary.

matters how fast you can talk or something

after you've done anything for a while you get the hang of it and can do it without watching, like driving, writing, brain surgery etc.

Voice recognition software may have evolved since, but my first experience with one about four years ago was desastrous. Despite having specifically 'programmed' in the name, Ludwig van Beethoven was once turned into "l'eau de vie des taureaux de Varennes" which translates as "the liquor of the bulls of Varennes" (small town in the East of France); not great, you'll have to admit! :D

Maybe but since you are a frenchman you have a strong accent.
De quelle région de la France est-tu?
:P

how do you get the whole voice recognition thing to work? It would dramatically decrease my essay writing time...Any free programs? what tool do you need? And btw i', not good aat toch....

I bought a sound card a few years ago and it came with a free software called "Dragon Naturally Speaking" or something along that line. It was pretty decent, actually. At that time, I had a pretty crappy mic but that didn't seem to have much effect. You spent maybe an hour or less reading a chosen excerpt (including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Ziggy Comics) to let you the software recognize your voice.

In the few weeks I spent with it, I had nary a problem except punctuation. It's generally useful for the dyslectic or the blind who still wish to use the Internet. But there's nothing stopping the lazy from using it, too

Or more accurately, "de quelle région de France es-tu?", but a sterling effort nevertheless. Since you ask, I'm from Brittany. I am bilingual (French & English) and my German accent is fairly adequate (that's why I dumped German for Music for the last two years of High School :) ). I had a program on PC to learn German, and when reading sentences out aloud I would always get 5 out of 5 for pronunciation; on the other hand, I would also get 5 out of 5 if I coughed, grumbled or miaowed at the microphone

I speak better Spanish than German, for my six years of Teutonic studies have left me with such useful words as Gurkensalat (cucumber salad), Meerschweinstein (guinea pig) and the classic "Fünf grosse Bier, bitte." (order as many times as required for everybody to be served sufficiently), as well as any combination thereof.

Back on topic, the speech recognition software I had the pleasure of using was the fairly expensive IBM Via-Voice. Each new user creates a profile, then reads out aloud as many as possible of the texts included so that the program can adjust to his pronunciation; it is also possible to specify the spelling and pronunciation of certain words. It wasn't terribly good on anything more complicated than Eurospeak, but it may have got better by now.

Touch typings for pussy's. Who cares if you look at the keyboard or the screen. What difference does it make. Only dumbasses who don't know who to spell look at the screen. I have my eyes on the keyboard all the time when i'm typing because i know that what i type will come up correctly on the screen. I could easily make 80 words per min just poking the keyboard. Touch typing slows me down.

In other words, you write like a chicken: a little peck here and a little peck there... Touch typing so much faster, that's why it's a good skill to have. That's also why we can type more than 80 words per minute.

But touch typing confines your hand and or hands, which could be used for other purposes like......you know.......grating the cheese stick ;)

... Or you could just learn how to touch type with one hand, which isn't a lot of work after you've learned how to touch type with two hands in the first place. Not touch typing confines more than just your hands.

Think about it.
