Why are people so stupid?

Ok, so I was chillin in the hallway with my friends today when this girl comes out of her room. "Hey guys! I have a question!" I think to myself, alright, I wonder what history question she has, cause she was studying for her history final. "Alright," I said. "What do you need?" She then proceeds to ask: "What ocean are we closest to? Atlantic or Pacific?"

At first, I thought this was some sort of joke. It had to be! Right? I mean, my school is in Connecticut, right on the Atlantic coast of the US. This girl lives in New Jersey, also right on the Atlantic coast of the US. We LIVE on the ATLANTIC COAST. So I thought, ha, nice joke.

"No really guys..I don't know! What are we closer to?"

"Are you serious?!?" I ask her. My friends around me had dumbfounded looks on their faces as well. We just couldn't believe that she asked that question, nevermind the fact that she didn't know the answer.
I was so angry that I just started banging my head on the door, and bouncing off the walls (literally). I could not believe the stupidity that just transpired. It took a good 10 minutes before we had all regained composure and answer her question.
And THEN, once we answered it, she didn't believe us!!! We had to go online and actually show her a map. It was unbelievable.

It THEN comes to my attention that her roommate ALSO did not know the answer! And THEN I find out that the girl nextdoor to them did not know what AM and PM were (in terms of their placement during the day, like AM in the morning, and PM in the afternoon), until this year, when she set her first alarm! That's right, she had never set a clock before.

And this also brings to mind another episode like this back in highschool. My friend from Germany had come to visit, and this idiot girl in my highschool actually asked my friend the following question: "Do they have seasons in Germany?"
That's right, SEASONS. GAAAAAH

Also, I'm not sure if this is just general stupidity, or is it just limited to idiot rich girls? Anyone else have experiences similar to this?
 
NO, stupidity is a modern thing.

Last week, i told someone that he needed to dial 9 on his cell phone because he was inside a corporate building and that everybody knows that inside corporate buidings you need to dial 0 for an outside line..... and he tried it.

Last year, a tv show from Canada went to the US with the only intention of showing how dumb smart people are. They had people from Harvard, Stanford, MIT and such sign petition against the Toronto seal hunt, sign petition to force Canada to use regular 24h time rather than the 10 hour metric time system.

a person is smart, people are dumb panicky and stupid ( MIB)

I don't think stupidity is only a modern thing, it probably also has something to do with the educational system and educational priorities of certain nations...

Not really. It more of the no-common sense rich girl thing. Happens everywhere. I have friends in Italy that are the same way.

Ever lived in Birmingham? The answer is yes.

There are fairly obvious equivilents. The Ugric people for the Russians, the Celts for the Germanic peoples, the Germanics for the Slavs, the Turks for the Greeks, the Thracians for the Greeks, the North Africans for the Iberians, the Africans/Assyrians for the Arabs.....it's not that fair to call it tremendously stupid. There's a rough equivelent for everybody save the Basques and the Georgians.
 
Um. I don't think the person was talking about ethnic groups outside the major european civilization in Europe. I think she asked if there is the same indigenous population as in North America.

Nope. Germanic people inhabited the area from Poland to the Azov until the Huns came along. The Germans all started moving west, and with these lands empty the Slavs (centered in the )Pripyat moved in, as they where not as warlike as the Geramanic people (they did not even have a God of War, oddly enough). Though the slavs displased Illyrians (think Albanians, only not Muslim) and some Germans in Yugoslavia, and Thracians and Vlachs (though the Vlachs survived) in Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria.

I consider myself to be a Slavophile (in the non-political sense), thus I don't wear my early Slavic history lightly.

The difference is that the Slavs didn't chase the Germanic tribes out of their land, unlike the Europeans, that submitted American (North and Latin America) tribes since the 16th century. That was my point on being "wrong", thought you took the Germanic tribes either as a proto-slav ethnical group or tribes chased out by the Slavs.

ya i bounce of walls and make a circle of angst with my friends because someone said something stupid and it took me 10 minutes to answer. fucking get used to life, people ask stupid things and you learn to cope with it.

Anyway, these tend to be fairly light weight. Nothing like Mars, Apollo or Tanri here I see.
