Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
There’s strength in numbers, right, and at most it’s 6 people, do why do the companions in Fallout 2 turn you down for having too many ppl (I know it’s gameplay but try and make an in-universe reason)

AFAIK it is because the PC is not a strong [enough] leader to inspire, manage, and instill confidence in a larger group than they have at the time.

Gameplay-wise, it depends upon the PC's Charisma stat.

Looks like loot/money/water/supplies would be cut too thin between the party for it to be a good idea to join, a party that looks like a troublesome motley crew to boot

They all feel compelled to argue for every single decision, including the pariah dog.
Plus, they all hate each other.
