Why do people live in The Den?

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
The Den is literally one of the worst places in the world. It’s all drugs and slavery and gangs and poverty. My question is, why do people even live there? I’d think people would try and get a caravan outta there

I think New Reno is worse, the Den's not that bad. Metzger usually leaves people alone, Mom makes some good spaghetti, and the BoS is even there to do something. Also you get the Highwayman from the Den.

But who does the farming. Most of the people in the Den just walk around high.

Most of the people we see ingame, yes.
But there could be well defended farms a few miles away, there could also jist be a farming district off screen, the same as there was a cut residential district.....

Slave trade makes money. Drugs are fun and also make money. Other than that it's an unremarkable burg with a cafe and a bar. The place wasn't war-torn or under threat from anyone. If you don't cross Metzger, you're fine. New Reno is infinitely more dangerous from criminals and wired junkies.

It's like any ghetto I guess. Rough but there's decent people buried in there like Becky and Mom.

There's probably farms and such around. Not to mention it trades with Klamath.

That said, I suspect the place is not all poverty. That slave trade must bring good money, even if Metzger and his goons are the ones seeing most of it. The real social issue is the fact everyone is on drugs.

Most people probably work for Metzger directly or indirectly.

Also a good portion of the population is likely raiders and other criminals. AFAIK if you kill the Slavers but don't kill/weaken the Mordinos, the Den becomes a haven for raiders. Den is probably where many criminals and gangs go to hide, cool down, get some R&R - well, the ones that don't go to New Reno anyway.
