Why do people prefer Fallout 2 over Fallout 1?

Yep, Per's list is a great motivation for finishing the engine port process ;)

Some of those are resolved already by FIXT, but the majority of them are impossible to resolve without the engine port.

Which is why, once it's finished, great possibilities will open up for FIXT and the Fallout 1 modding community. There's a growing list of things I can't do now that will be easy once the engine port is done, like restoring endings and all sorts of balance changes.

I rather want remake of Wasteland than upgrade version of Fo1...

Climb up vine to infilterate, seperate party to do various things, good puzzles and dungeons, and etc. it has far better portential than Fo1 I think.
But I think it worth to upgrade Fo1's contents with improved system of Fo2.

But for currency, trade over 999 isn't necessary to fix because bottle cap isn't actually money. it's just intended to help trade not to be real currency to displace money I think. if trader don't have enough caps, just trade other worthy things or just abandom some value to end transection. it's far better scene for PA I think.

Well, I admit I'd like to see wasteland ported to a newer engine, even if only to be able to play it right away (right now, I'm into too many things to pay attention to the user manual), but you should consider the fact that upgrading FO 1 to what is essentially the same engine (i.e., it's actually an upgrade, instead of what would be a complete porting and rework) is far more doable.
And caps are money in the FO universe. By the time of FO 1, is the only accepted money in the area affected by that game. In fact, you just described what money is for.

sfall has an option to control your companions in combat

Yeah I seriously need to quit my bitchin' and download it.

To FO2's enourmas credit though, my aversion to combat has been more than accomidated, as I've run into VERY little actual fighting. I've clocked in about 22 hours on FO2 so far (1st time through :) ), I'm lvl 11, and I've had, get this- TWO fire fights.

I mean, how many RPGs let you get away with that? You can truly play FO2 in so many ways, which is what makes it awesome. Maybe Arcanum allows mostly pacifist playthrough as well - never tried it.

So yeah, I've -hated- the combat in FO2 - but it more than redeems itself for me by allowing me to 'avoid' combat anyway - which is so unique for RPGs. Either that or I've been living under a rock.

((for example, how can you beat Dragon Age Origins without killing hundreds of darkspawn, blood mages, cultists, thuggish dwarves, werewolves, etc?))

Fewer fights means the ones I do have are that much more epic.

Edit: Oh yeah, can count them. 1) Fending off wild dogs from a guy's farm. 2) *SPOILER* A big shootout at Vault 15 to clear out Dorian and his Khan cronies.

Thats it - those two fights. Freakin' awesome.

@Ekans22:

Why would you WANT to avoid combat in Fallout? Combat is fun, that's one of my favorite parts of the game. Especially the flavor text and death animations. You're really missing out.

I mean I can get playing a specific build like that, but after this one you should play a combat-based character.

Combat in Fallout can be quite annoying at times (especially the random encounters). In Fo2, I am running away from pretty much all encounters that force me into fighting.

Haha, true that!

I dunno - wanted to try something different. In every other FO game I've done a combat heavy character. My FO2 character is actually 'afraid' of guns

Ohh okay, I must have read it wrong, I thought you were saying you only played Fallout that way with all the characters you've played.

And yeah I need to do a RP character next time. Usually I just do whatever the fuck I want, next time I'll need to think up a story and such behind the character 8-)

How about the enemy flees out of the map?
I really annoyed when that happens.
Indeed, I always hated the shit out of that. That's actually why I introduced my "Hardcore AI" for FIXT, but I'm not sure how well it actually works. That was the sole motivation behind it, was to stop fuckers from constantly running away from combat.

With the Party Orders Addon mod for Fallout 2 if a critter dies off screen you can walk to the map edge and order your party members to loot bodies that you can't reach.

That's so awesome. Yet another reason it will be a great day when Fo1 is running in Fo2 engine

I try to avoid combat in most games. I get some kind of satisfaction out of avoiding combat. Feel like a ninja.

As for the thing about F3 and FNV, let's not start. Because if start, we expect you to defend your opinion. Beside, it's off topic.

I uh... never once said Fallout 3 was better than New Vegas. Where did you get that?

And I did back up my opinion. In fact, my thoughts backing up my opinion are posted all over this thread.

:sigh: reread it carefully. that post didnt mention anything about which is better and why, discuss!!!!one . That the point of the post. Touch not the F3 matter.

Fair enough :p

I've had this discussion with many people. Interface improvements aside, Fallout 1 wins for me.

IMO:

But they're very different games - Fallout one is a great sci-fi / postapoc story. The second one is fun if you've played the first one, but is ultimately too flawed and hollow in too many places. And a bit indulgent with references, has criminal pacing (well, I like it an play it a lot, but still).

"Fixing" fallout 1 consists of improving the interface - other than that it stands really well on it's own as a compact atmospheric story.

Fallout 2, once there is something like the definitive RP out there that fixes all the basics, can use a ton of work on pulling the world togather. The way it plays out right now even a lot of original content plays as disconnected from the rest of the world. And to anyone who never played fallout 1 the story is all over the place.

HOWEVER:

While we're at it - is there a scripter willing to team up on "patching" the world togather? I'm a professional writer with a big bunch of ideas for alternate solutions to quests, and a way to make every bit of obviously blank space make sense (think the orphanage quest in the den in the RP).
