Why does the Pipboy look so beaten down?

Revolver

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Why does the Pipboy look so beaten down? I know it fits the atmostphere and everything, but shouldn't it have been in the vault the whole time and been preserved with all the other stuff? Unless there was something I forgot about its origins...

As the Brand-Spanking-New-Mod here in the GFD forum, please allow me to say this:

What? I'm not really understanding what you're asking/stating here.

I was just wondering why the original Pipboy 2000 interface looked like it's been sitting in the wasteland for hundreds of years, when (I think) it should have been stored in the vault before the Vault Dweller took it with him.

Okay, I thought you were talking about the PIPBoy character, which explains my confusedness.

Hmm...

That IS a good question!

Okay, carry on....

That brings up another issue: I know it's generally accepted among the fan community that the character is called Fallout Boy and not Pipboy. But if you ever went to the Vault City computer with a dumb character, they refer to it as a Pipboy. So Pipboy is also right... :)

He He I thought you were talking about Pipboy the spammer.

I think it was because the overseer didn't want to send the original vault dweller out into the wastes with valuable technology. So he gave him/her a busted up one. Remember the overseer wasn't exactly a saint.

That's probably right, though, if I was counting on someone for the survival of the community, it'd kinda make sense to give him decent equipment. My memory is kinda hazy though. Did they ever give a reason why they were only sending out only ONE guy to save them all??

I spent 7 hours and 23 minutes trying to kill the Overseer. Then I passed out.
Well, the reason, I guess, is that no one ever had use of it, and thusly, no one ever cleaned it. And some scab took the scanner out of it.

My thoughts exactly.

IIRC that button was supposed to be labeled "Clues", but the function was problematic, ergo the designers went w/the knocked-off button look.

Sorry, can't remember where I "heard" that.

Edit: Ausir is quoted in the Fallout Bible 9 as saying that it was the "Clues" button in the FO demo.
