Why is Dogmeat called Dogmeat

I think it was because in a movie ( A boy and his dog, I think) the main character refers to his dog as "dogmeat".

Also, in Fallout 3, they just reused the name of the dogs in fallout 1 and 2

The dog companion is from Fallout 1, not Fallout 3. Initially, the name used was Dogshit, and for another dog. Scott Bennie came up with the name Dogmeat for that dog, and later another dev decided to use the name for a recruitable companion dog in Junktown.

Not sure if this is meant to be a "HAR HAR FALLOUT 3 JUST COPIED THE IDEA" comment or you forgot that Fallout 3 also has a dog companion named Dogmeat (which actually was the best characterized companion of the game  ).

Why the har har? Fallout 3's Dogmeat is as unique and original as the bass line of Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby

Uh? I'm not sure I understand.. I never claimed having a dog companion called Dogmeat in Fallout 3 was an original idea. It's obviously a homage (arguably one of the most tastefully done, when you compare it to the way the Enclave is reintroduced and the treatment the super mutants received), and I take it as such.

But I'm still not sure if Brother None was being sarcastic there or if age is getting to him and he's starting to forget things.

More likely he was simply commenting on Dogmeat's first appearance. Everyone saw the pictures of Dogmeat in Fallout 3, so I'm sure BN did too.

"HAR HAR FALLOUT 3 SUCKZ AS A FALLOUT GAME!!!!"

I did like Dogmeat in Fallout 3 though. He was one of my favorite companions.

 Of course I didn't. Even if I had, Landonio already pointed out Dogmeat is in all 3 main Fallout games right above me. But the question in the OP was "why did they name to dog", I was replying to that, and it's pretty relevant to point out the dog was named in Fallout 1, not 3. Yeeesh.

I'd heard a rumor that in Mad Max, he referres to his dog as "dogmeat" in the beginning of the movie, and that's where the name came from--but I have NO idea if that is true or crap. I'd bet on the crap though, knowing how rumors are.

The dog is a reference to The Road Warrior, yes. In Fallout 1, one way to recruit Dogmeat is to simply wear a leather jacket near him (which is the same as Mad Max wore in Road Warrior), which reminds the dog of his old owner.
The name Dogmeat comes from the movie „A Boy and His Dog“ in which the protagonist Vic calls his dog „Dogmeat“ from time to time (despite his name being „Blood“. Blood calls Vic „Albert“ in retaliation. Looks like the guys from Black Isle really liked that movie :D).

Haven't seen it? You're in for a treat! During development of Fallout the team explored post-apocalyptic fiction in all mediums. A Canticle for Leibowitz. Mad Max, A Boy and His Dog, City of Lost Children, Wasteland and a number of P&P games. If you want to know more about the development Tim Cain gave a great speech http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xa5IzHhAdi4
But yeah, I'm pretty sure Dogmeat is a reference to Mad Max, as is the leather armor.
