witcher advice?

so, I just started the tutorial for the first witcher, and while the game seems like a crappy arcade game I'll stick it out awhile.

I need to start allocating points on my character and I'm loking for some commentary on how some of this stuff is used, if anybody's so inclined.

edit: ok, so it looks like the first int and dex abilities (potion brewing and flaying) are labeled 'story abilities', or whatever --- should I not be wasting a point on lvl one int and dex, then?

Story abilities are free talents given to you when you reach certain points in the plot. You'll still want to put points in level one as you'll a, get plenty of bronze talents and b, some unlock other abilities. For the first level though I'd take one dexterity, one steel sword fast style and one steel sword group style.

points in alchemy are important. And it does not cost that much. You will know monsters and plants from the begining. (it should be somewhere in the "inteligence tree")

It depends on what you prefer though. Inteligence is important for the Signs I think. But it is not needed to get it all to the highest rank. The fire and "push" sign are quite usefull. Particularly fire is good against most enemies - with a few exceptions. In later stages you can set them on fire and with the correct sword combination/skills you will hack your way trough them.

Alchemy gives you the chance to brew potions which if you play in higher difficulty are a mandatory. They give you better chances to survive in hard fights. I would really collect ingredients from plants and animals. With saying that. If you find books read them. They quite often have valuable informations about monsters around you which you will need for the side quests (people asking you for certain ingredients). And you can only get them if your character knows the monster. You could earn as well a fortune with playing diece. But that might not be your thing.

I can't recollect everything, but a proper advice which I was given when I first played the game is to, in the beginning, immediately decide whether you want to play as a "fighter" or "mage" - essentially, whether you want to boost your sword wielding skills or Signs.

Depending on the game difficulty, when you start, it can be quite important to focus on how you will engage in combat, since it is such an important element of the game.
At later levels, you will probably be able to equate the two skill paths.
