According to ShackNews:
Noting the number represent sales to "real, live people" playing on a platform some have declared "dead", CD Projekt RED announced that its debut project The Witcher (PC) has sold through one million copies since the game's release twelve months ago.
"We created The Witcher with the intent of becoming an acclaimed and successful development studio that always made games for its fans; we spent more than $11 million developing The Witcher and the Enhanced Edition, and it sure is nice to make some of that money back!" said CEO Adam Kicinski about the milestone.
And according to the Polish Gazeta Wyborcza paper, they're still a couple of thousands in the red... but expecting the game to sell several hundred thousand more copies over the next few years.

Does that 11 million include actual industry production costs? Not in making the game per say, but in constructing the cd's manuals and jewel case?

Well I hope they succeed and that they will consider making a science fiction or futuristic themed RPG in the future.

It doesn't have to do with a PA world, spaceships or dystopias are cool too.

I would love to see something like "The Witcher 2" someday !
I also heard that they said that the game might make its way to consoles ! how the hell is that possible ? I can't imagine to play The Witcher with a controller .

11 million development.
1 million x 40-50 = 40-50 million back?

NET yes, but the developers only make a fraction of that. publishers, and many other layers that latch onto game development take their chunk of flesh.

I'm not certain how much they sold in Poland, but they were their own publishers in most of central Europe.

I understand that, but doesn't much of the money come from publishers in which case it would be the publishers needing to break even?
And where they published it themselves doesn't it mean more money comes back?
But I guess they don't have a reason to lie about this. It just seems a bit weird to me.

Poland accounted for 1/4 of the total, similar to the US. Other major sales were in Germany and, yes, Russia.

Porting to console ain't that difficult I guess - only thing they would have to make is lock-on target and the player just clicks when the next sequence is due.

As for the sales - it's good to see that PC gaming isn't all dead. Necromancy FTW.

Good to see there is still a market for decent RPGs.

With the market being bombarded by craptastic and uninspired 'RPG' game, there is always a place for a true to honest and well game title.

Er, there's no way they have a $40-50 margin on sales on a product that doesn't even sell for that much. A very big chunk of that goes to the stores(!), distribution and publishing in areas where they were not the publisher.

Also, considering the fact that they mentioned $11 million for *developing*, I don't think publishing costs and profits are even incorporated into this.

If The Witcher will get a console port i hope it gets mouse/keyboard support like ps3 UT3. I wonder why that isnt used more often with games thatd play better like that...

I was happily surprized they sold 1 mill actually. Kinda sucks that they didn't break even. They could probably do well if they advertised it a little heavier in US.

the game was "sold" in poland and russia? nice. being a country that has its own dvd-format for early publishing to "block" out the ubiqitous piracy.
