X-Play Fallout 3 special feature

I was looking forward to this but X-Play let me down. Not much there that we haven't seen before. Adam is a huge fan of fallout so I guess I was expecting more...

I'm not sure if you can blame X-Play for that, but indeed the feature is not worth any hoohah.

If that surprises you, you don't know Bethesda very well. They're obsessive about parcelling out information in sparse packages.

Wow, talk about free advertising time pretending to be a real interview, then again that's G4 for ya. If Istvan Pely was suggesting that Mad Max took place in California (art vid), he needs to rewatch any one of those movies, though I'm pretty sure that he was just talking about the first two Fallout games. Hey Adam, VATS isn't TB, jackass. They are overselling the violence again, it's not as violent as at least Todd seems to think. They claim Bethesda is known for making some of the deepest RPGs which, as we all know, is total bs. Toddster is proud of their level system and talks about the reason being the Elder Scrolls games... Turning point for Bethesda was being bought by Zenimax, at least they admit it. Pete says that the reason they bought the game was that it was an open world game so finally they admit that it wasn't because they were fans.

If you continue to put all your points into lockpicking but not combat, so your not getting better at killing people but your able to break into places that you're getting really stupid powerful stuff so that even that your not as good at using them they're so powerful that your better at combat because you're getting access to resources you wouldn't have had otherwise.
Confirmation to anyone in doubt that the game really does boil down to being about combat.

Sure it's Bethesda's format but that's only because X-Play and G4 let them dictate the terms instead of actually negotiating or dictating the terms themselves. G4's programing about gaming is all advertisements, they rarely really dig into a game and never any big title. The days of Tech TV and interesting programming are long dead.

No one is as bad as Bungie, though. I have come to despise them because they never give you solid information-just teasers! Well, maybe not despise, but they really, really, really annoy me :)

Back to the main point of this thread, I actually thought the open world feature had a lot of good info and video clips in it. I don't know about the rest of the footage, since I'm kind of in a crunch for time and can't be bothered to watch it now, but I loved what I saw. I was particularly impressed by Rivet City. Also, I usually play many more hours than is predicted for a game, so I expect to be cuddling up with Fallout 3 for upwards of 150 hours.

I truly cannot wait to see how this turns out :)

It didn't really surprise me but I was hoping that since it was G4 and X-play who has given Bethesda a scolding before that they would have been able to squeeze a little more out of them instead of the lame ass Todd Time. The game releases on the 28th. Other pirated game play has been leaked... Actually if they were smart they would have just used some of the crap that was leaked...Anyway House is on gotta go.

When did they give Bethesda a scolding? They gave Oblivion a perfect review and best game of the year when it came out.

Well, stuff like halo is pretty predictable :)
You'd have to be tight lipped for there to be any kind of surprise or woah effect...

So if you pick up lockpicking and go around opening doors you can get gear so good that it doesn't matter that you don't have the strength or skill or anything to actually operate these items?

Sounds a bit wonky to me...

Whatever. Please, lets stop going on and on about the fact that the game relies heavily on combat. Combat was also a big part of the previous Fallout titles as well. But this is an FPS with RPG elements. Not the other way around. Does it deserve the title of Fallout 3? Hell no. But that is what they've given us. (And lo, Beth makes another hybrid game with mediocre voice acting... and the world shamelessly rates it a 10/10.)

To stay more directly on-topic, though, X-Play's Fallout 3 "special" was anything but. A complete disappointment.

Well it's politicolly correct now I beleive to call children victims of mental retardation 'special,' so all the 'special' coverage of Fallout 3 becomes more apt with the expanding definitions that being politicolly correct brings us.

Gay once meant 'happy' as well once upon a time, oh say back in the 50s era which inspired much of Fallout. And in that spirit I'd say Fallout 3 and the reviews given to it seem very 'Happy' indeed.

nah, not happy. its rather sad i think.
i wish it were gay.
spongebob is gay.
if fallout 3 had half the wit of spongebob, that would be great.
but i'm afraid its more like G.I.Joe. Straight all the way.

They are proud of Elder Scrolls level system!?!?!?!? WTF?! How the FUCK can they be proud of that? The system is so absolutely awful it has no advantages whatsoever, it's only a bother for those who want to play the actual game... Because there is no "game" in ES's level system, if you know what I mean.

I didn't see any crap interview videos, only read the comments here.

I wonder if they are gonna return to full level scaling + skill based system for their next TES, or if they are gonna somehow use SPECIAL? would it be possible to transfer it over to fantasy settings? obviously half of the skills would have to be replaced, but other than that..

Elder Scrolls system is based on GURPS anyway. The most definitive difference between it and special is the learn as you do thing, which ruins the whole experience for good. If they take it off, they pretty much have special already.

I think he meant of the Fallout 3 level system.

There is a game, but it isn't fun at all. The ES2-4 leveling system is proof that realism shouldn't be used as a guiding principle in RPG design.

there should be some realism (granted that the creator wants realism, of course) but you always have to draw the line for where it isn't a game any longer.

I hated the levelling system in Morrowind (though I liked the game as a whole) - it was very easy that the game became some sort of olympics game where you're just running and jumping around. that's the only thing they actually improved with Oblivion - you could no longer jump up and down from a hill for a few hours to max your level and strength.

but the whole idea that stats affect every other part of your character, and your interactions with the surrounding world is GOOD realism. also, I like the idea of having your stats improved only if you actually train and use them.
