XP or Vista?

I'm running vista home premium 64-bit on a quad core with 8 gig of ram. I've only needed to run one game in a compatability mode and the old games I can't run have issues with either my processor or amount of ram not vista. It's not a dream os by any means but then it hasn't been the nightmare that I half expected.

Will Windows 7 get screwed in the rush to release it. To make up for the vista marketing flop just like me and xp?

Could, maybe. AFAIK, it doesn't. Is there a way to run DX10 on XP?

Well Company of Heroes for instance had a hack if I recall correctly where you could use DX10 under XP.

On topic of OS'es, I'm looking for something easy and very lightweight to install on a 10 year-old rig.

You wanna use a linux distry or with a bit of luck windows 2000, depends on your RAM. I proberbly hit xubuntu

Making the game 'believe' you have DX10 and actually installing DX10 on XP are two different things.

True, but if the hard and software is technically capable and MS says it requieres Vista to work at all..
Sounds like Bethestashit to me.

The "sense" is that Microsoft made it so that DX10 will not work in XP.
There are hacked installers that will make it install and work in XP just as in Vista.

The 'hacks' for DX10 on XP are far from complete though.

Yes, it is marketing, just like many other steps Microsoft took to make people buy Vista, but the fact is that by the end of the year, there will be more new stuff incompatible with XP, than there is old stuff incompatible with Vista.

As for Win7, it is unlikely to be the messiah of OS that many people think it will be.
