You see: Shuttle

thenoseknows

First time out of the vault
You see nothing out of the ordinary. ... Seriously? After spending months wandering the wasteland, trekking through dark caves, and visiting run-down towns, this is the description that the game gives to a frigging space shuttle parked on the Golden Gate Bridge??

I think I get what the OP is after, but a description in which the player is stunned and has no idea what the strange machine on the bridge is for is also a little overdone.
The shuttle is just a quest plot point and a backdrop object, it does not really play an important role.

If the tribalism background had to be overplayed the player would have been confused by anything pre war he/she would encounter; junked cars, computers, robots, nuclear power plants and so on.

Personally I feel that the tribals of Arroyo were not all "The sun is magic" type (people who had forgotten all the knowledge of the pre war world and had return to a low civilization/superstitious state).
Characters like the player were most likely the exceptions, still having a general understanding of the world including stuff from the pre war civilization.

Well I do think it's obvious the writing got increasingly lazy towards the end of the game, obviously because the devs ran out of time and had to rush the completion. At the beginning, in Arroyo, Klamath etc, nearly everything has detailed descriptions. They become less as the game progresses. Too bad they had to rush things... they still made a great game, but it could have been absolutely phenomenal... think Restoration Project on steroids.

Black Isle's was a sad story of enormous potential gone partly to waste with the rushing of Fallout2 and cancellation of Van Buren.

They did a good job on the first game though. Gotta acknowledge that, lest this post sound too whiny.

I've also noticed that. Some little decorative animal carcass under Arroyo bridge that I'm sure 99% of players didn't even notice has a nice description and a space shuttle does not. But to be fair, I think at this point in the game most players gave up reading descriptions of stuff.

Oh like that, no I though the OP thought the writing was bad because it did not feel authentic enough.
I didn't realize it was the general description text that was considered rather poorly written, no mentioning of details.

They become less as the game progresses.

I would say that it get more and more interesting as the game progress, then get underwhelming with Mariposa/Navarro/Oil Rig/San Francisco. Less NPC of interest, less quests, less options, less fun, less politic. But everything before that is still great.
And even there, we have the Enclave and the Hubologist, that are great additions to the lore.

It does kinda peter out towards the end.

I do love what there is.

Stuff like " You see rocks " and then you keep looking and it will something like " You see rocks...but you'll keep an eye on them in case they attack " I know that's not the exact quote. But still funny stuff.
And there are some true rare gems out there that had me going WTH !

Instead of just shuttle, it should have said something like...

" You see a shuttle, one the last ones commandeered by the very rich and powerful to try and escape the war. However this particular shuttle crashed landed on the bridge due a gross overweight problem caused by cramming 40 fat guys ( and their secretaries ) on board. The shuttle landed safely with no injuries...however the survivors were promptly eaten by the local cannibal population "

The chief cannibal was quoted as saying " Who says food just doesn't fall out of the sky ?"...and that fat guys go good with a nice chardonnay.

But honestly, your character lived in a tribe with no technology for their whole life, even if they are a total braniac I'm pretty sure they wouldn't know what a space shuttle actually was, they'd think it was simply a pre-war vehicle that (obviously) broke down.

They simply didn't added a description text for every object in the game. Maybe it was simply forgotten.

Fallout rocks aren't mere rocks. They are granite improved version.

About the shuttle, it might be that they forgot the text, but they might also have forgotten to link the description with the item.
