Resident Evil 7 Demo

Chud

Still Mildly Glowing
Have any of you tried it out yet? What did you think? Personally, I like this PT-esque direction. I'm not a fan of the more action orientated REs, and really miss the days when it was a survival horror series. The writing and dialogue, though pulpy, sounds like it's in the right direction. I did not notice any cringey one-liners or bad bits of moralizing. Just a couple of regular people in way over their heads. The demo in a small way reminds me of the game Siren, in which there's more than one path to get from point A to B. The share level of detail to the environment and things that one could literally miss if not throrough enough with the flashlight. The slow build-up and toying with the player. Very refreshing for the series.

I only saw about 30 seconds of gameplay with a mannequin that moved and I don't like it. It does not feel like Resident Evil, it feels far more like Silent Hill. I don't want REvil to become Silent Hill and vice versa. Just like I didn't want Fallout to turn into TES. REvil should be REvil and Silent Hill should be Silent Hill.

REvil is about monsters, zombies, puzzles, weird experiments and corny dialogue who's quality is that of intro scenes in porn. That's what I like about it. Silent Hill is about creepy psychological horror. I don't want either to bleed into the other.

Yes and no. Resident Evil also had a ton of atmosphere and creeping dread, things lost when it became an action adventure series. It was survival horror, a sense of being alone with your wits and sparse supplies, trapped within a building and looking for an escape. All things present if the demo's a sign of things to come. I'll admit the dummies are weak, more because that sort of scare's been done to fucking death by this point. What I did like was the way the narration unfolded. There's no info dumping, no square-jawed dude pointing out the obvious. The first RE game was no masterpiece of writing, but it at least tried to be scary and often succeeded. Yet once the action overtook the horror in the series, it became more like The Matrix sequels. Not good. And I could not care less if this game feels like Silent Hill, because I'll gladly take that over something like Resident Evil 5 or 6.

Edit: I am very biased towards Silent Hill-styled games, yet I do see where you're coming from.

I played it and I really enjoyed it.
I can certainly see the similarities between P.T and the REVIII Demo, but I think both stay true to their roots in how the game is played.
P.T took a much more repetitive approach, where you'll go around the same Hallway a few times but something is different on each turn. What made it creepier was how inconsistent the Hallway way, there were three room yet the house presented itself like a Square.
REVIII was about Exploring. You had to search around the House to find where to go, and you had to find clues to help you solve the puzzles.

Both are very good demos and I'm glad that P.T has had some sort of impact on the industry. I don't normally like Horror games as I can't stand Jump Scares, but REVIII does seem like a return the series roots which isn't a problem. It's taking popular gameplay styles from the modern age and updating the atmosphere the older games had.

Personally, I look forward to REVIII, but I may wimp out if it has too many jump scares.

I'd eat a Jill Sandwich. looks crunchy.

I hope RE7 returns RE to Its roots. 5 and 6 felt a bit too much like those Paul W.S. Anderson abominations IMO.
