Sports in Fallout

pyroD

Still Mildly Glowing
I know for a fact that in Fallout 3 baseball is mentioned, and you see pool tables, basketballs and the like. But were there really any professional sports in the fallout universe? Not every type of ball is shown and neither are stadiums of any kind.

Just because you don't see it in the game, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Haven't seen any bicycles as well, yet I am pretty sure that they exist as well.

The GNN news holodisk you find at the Sierra Army Depot mentions the Super Bowl, IIRC, but it was also declared non-canon by Chris Avellone because some of the more relevant news items would have made a mess of the timeline. I think it's still a safe bet that pro football exists.

I could see Football (Soccer to the yanks) being quite a popular sport in the wasteland: Its requires only a big field of dirt or grass, a ball (which can be easily made from brahmin leather or something like that), something to be the two goals and a few people, with 22 people or more if you really want to go at it.

Also, unlike American Football, Rugby or Baseball, the equipment required is quite few and easy to obtain, and football isn't as violent so there's a lot less risk for contusions, broken limbs and bones, etc.

Football could be a good way to entertain people, and keep in shape and encourage teamwork.

I can see the Legion doing a american football-like sport, through, violent, brutal, requires strength and endurance, they even got the gear for that. Imagine a bunch of pre-teen legion kid soldiers playing american football during their off-hours. Hey, Legionnaries have to do some R&R too!

I'm surprised archery ins't helluva popular in the wasteland; Hell I find it ludicrous that tribals don't use bows or crossbows. A bow or a crossbow beats some nailboard anyday of the week, and they're a easily-made weapon that could be easily produced for bands with scarce firearms, and for ammo all you need is some wood and perhaps a metal tip.

Hunting seems like popular occupation in the waste, however, some people are really upset about it. Though I don't why, if you don't want to get shot wear the damn orange vest!

------------------------------------------------------------
Not all are professional, some are just local sports but i guess its worth mentioning.
------------------------------------------------------------

1) mutated animal race - present in fallout 2 (reeding i think) and fallout 3 (some raiders you find in dc i guess)

2) boxing - in fallout 1 (junktown) and 2 (new reno)

------------------------------------------------------------
Not mentioned but plausible
------------------------------------------------------------

1) Slave hunt - post apocalyptic "hide and seek"

2) mutated animal fights - albino radscorpion x deathclaw (comon !? admit you took a break to watch it)

3) pre war games - football and baseball should have survived.

4) ?

Soccer is the world sport. I read a Nat Geo where kids made temporary soccer balls using little other than plastic bags and string, in war-torn african countries.

I think it can safely be said that beyond the shadow of a doubt, soccer would be popular in the wasteland.

They only play this

I think American Football would have survived too--I doubt that a post apocalyptic world would be too concerned over padding and proper equipment. Basketball would probably have survived as well. FO is based on a 50s era America, and baseball, football, and basketball were all part of that era (although baseball was arguably the most popular).

Improvises sports could be the animal racing as someone mentioned and animal fighting (this was actually seen not only in FO NV, but also in Redding in FO2). Then you'd have some areas with gladiator-esque arena's for human vs human combat, like in FO3 in The Pitt--or for that matter in New Vegas, with the Legion.
