Thinking about playing THAT game... just to conquer the nightmare

Didn't know where else to put it here, but I'm thinking about one day... um... am I even allowed to mention it?

Well, this is with good intentions, and by doing, I shall use my experience to encourage countless others to NOT play it. I am like the Lone Wanderer who didn't bother getting the Broken Steel DLC after dealing witn Col. Autumn and staring at Project Purity.

Okay, here goes...I want to play Brotherhood of Steel. Not for enjoyment, but as a first-hand experience to see how bad those numbnuts screwed around with Fallout canon & if there was anything worth mentioning.

I am not encouraging flame bait, but while I'm working on replacing my PC's DVD-RW, I should hold off on Tactics and see about that installment.I'll report when I get it and account my firsthand experience with this. But, I wanna know if you guys are okay with this?

First of all, sometimes the people here really really overact sometimes
That said, Brotherhood of Steel on the PS2/Xbox really is not such an extremely bad game, it is just a very average use of the franchise and what really angered a lot of fans here the most was that its production was possible by cancelling Van Buren (Interplay had hoped that focus on the console market would pay off)

There are actually elements of F:BOS that I liked such as the secret Vault Tec vault (why shouldn't they have their own private installation) and the Attis army.
Even the plot device wasn't that bad; the Super Mutants looking for a cure for sterility. In the game it is not even called FEV, rather it was something else the Vault Tec scientists created to cure mutation induced sterility, the manual later turned it into yet another supply of FEV.

At least it was a lot more original than Fallout 3's crappy storyline that ripped of Fallout 1 and 2, and got a by the numbers "I search for my father because I love him/need to know why he left, and he directs my life" bit tagged on which apparently easily impressed journalists mistake for good writing. (You couldn't even be pissed at the asshole)

Just do be ready for a lot of average and juvenile written dialogue and humor that is mostly the same level found in Fallout 3.

Well, personally, I don't actually think BOS is THAT bad of a video game (it would fall more into the usual "good concept, poor execution" deal). However, I'm new here, and I don't want to get into trouble early on in my NMA posting, so I looked around ("Lurk and Learn"), and one of the "no-nos" that is commonly referred to is "don't say BOS is a great game", but considering some of the reactions, it might as well be "don't say anything nice about BOS". So, I thought I'd let that in mind. Personally, I'm a fan of some video games that get maligned so dang easily, like "Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest".

I also want support in following my actual playthrough of the game, which'd probably be my first major activity on No Mutants Allowed, so I had to find some kind of hook to get people interested in this whenever I finally get a copy for my XBox.

I do agree that the fan anger, at that time and probably still today, more than a decade later, lies in the fact that Van Buren was cancelled, and instead fans got Contradictary Shooter RPG.

Oh, don't get me started on Fallout 3. I only bothered to play that one after I was able to get a copy for my PS3 dirt cheap (I'm planning on getting the GOTY edition just to see if the DLC was better than the main game personally), and this was long after I got to enjoy the wonders of New Vegas (plus, NV was an Obsidian production, meaning it felt more like an authentic Fallout game, while 3 was Bethesda's Take on What Fallout Should Be).

The main story plot was extremely linear, and although the other games have a linear start, you do have the freedom to choose how you get to the destination. And, don't forget the most common resolution for the Lone Wanderer and Vault 101 being exactly the same as the Vault Dweller and Vault 13... "You're a hero, and you must leave."

However, thanks for warning me about the dialogue for BOS. I hate juvenile attempts at being "badass", like the 3DS version of Driver: Renegade where you have Tanner saying "So long forever, asshole!" and "Oops, sorry shithead!". So, I'll be sure to brace for cringe-worthy moments.

You have every right to say you enjoyed FoBOS.
On the other hand, if you say, for instance, that it has a better plot than FoNV, you should be ready to defend that statement agains't everyone.

But even there, we won't bite, we won't ban you, we won't force you to wear an awfull avatar. We won't just stop defending our opinion. You will be free to proceed or to change the subject but won't ever be "harmed" by any NMA member for having a different opinion.

Alright. Thanks for letting me know, but I'll be making a new thread when I finally get my copy. I just thought I'd make it clear my intentions as well as being an example of an outsider exploring something for the first time and experiencing first-hand the game itself. Even people who do have an unfavorable view of FoBOS should be interested. And you need not worry about me saying that. New Vegas is my favorite installment (Fallout 2 is second), and nothing will change that. Unless the hypothetical Fallout 4 is an Obsidian take on something outside the Core Region.

I happen to have finished the game myself a couple of times so if I may give you an advice;

- In general don't try to waste to much money on ammunition at the start. (guns in general do average damage until you have boosted your character stats, and the really good ranged weaponry only becomes available later)
You are better of sticking to melee attacks first.
- Save your stimpacks for really troublesome situations, if you get seriously injured while going through a regular area it is better to wait until your characters health regenerates. (there is health regeneration but it is very slow)
- Be careful with buying armor, a lot of it can often be found in chests and containers, quite often just after a vendor has it available. Only a few times did I buy armor from a vendor.

Oh geez, I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to disagree with any positive feedback this game is given. I happen to own it myself, I bought it because I couldn't believe it was as bad as people were saying. And I have to say that they're right. This game bored me to tears. While the concept was pretty decent, the execution was terrible and the story was filled with holes and irrationality. Since I didn't finish the game, there is one part of the game that seriously bugged me, but I don't want to post any spoilers

Well, I haven't played the game yet, so I have to reserve all positive/negative comments on it until then. However, I did order the game off eBay, so I shall experience it soon.

Apologies if this post looks like crap because I did it with a portable device (vBulletin doesn't recognize proper spacing for some reason), but I got my copy yesterday & I am working on my new thread and typing my thoughts on the game. I should post it here tomorrow at the earliest and while it won't be a N.M.A. headliner, at least it'll be interesting.

So how are you recording it?
I tried the emulator version and it went rather wonky to say the least.

Well, here's the thing... I'm not recording any video. This is gonna be an oral discussion about my progress. I don't have any high-tech stuff to record video feedback.

I'm also wondering how to take photos during the game to prove I've done them, which I haven't done yet. I'll have to borrow a camera from my brother because my Nintendo 2DS doesn't do so well with video images as far as still photos go.

This is a low-tech walkthrough I'll have of the game, but I already typed a lot of my experiences.

Anyway, I'm gonna start this new thread Monday morning, so I'll have about 4 days of comments beforehand ready, and I'll continue 'till I beat the game.

This is, one of the parts where I will have to disagree with you, Ghost. Brotherhood of Steel is indeed, one of the most terrible things I've ever laid my hands on. Now, I'm not just talking about, it's a terrible Fallout game. I mean, it's a terrible game all-around. Terrible Fallout game, terrible video game period. The writing isn't what got to me (while indeed the writing wasn't a 100% masterpiece either), it was just the gameplay, the atmosphere, and hell man, the game itself. Just a terrible-fucking-game. There's a reason that people call it Fallout: POS. So when I went to renew my Fallout copy have my little brother found mine and used it as a Frisbee, I got the Fallout Trilogy and, everytime I pop it in to install I ALWAYS leave out Brotherhood of Steel.

Also, when you dust it off a little, Fallout 3 is actually a solid game. Now, it's not a solid FALLOUT game (which is why I always think of it as a spin-off title, which allows me to play this game without moving through the whole thing having Fallout-level expectations ((this same little trick allowed me to enjoy Tactics when I could never do that before)). And when that's all said and done, it's definitely not a bad game, especially after you've installed several mods), but it's a solid game nevertheless. Also yes, I am one of the few who discovered Fallout 1 first, and still play Fallout 3. The only thing about Fallout 3 that truly, truly pisses me off is all the bullshit you have to go through to get it to work on Windows 8. I went through no end of trouble to get it to work on my new OS, and something tells me I'm still not out of the woods yet *knock on wood*.

Checking the other thread and your mention of Fallout 1.
I can tell you that the time-limit for finding the water chipe is unfortunately a non-issue. You can take your time, talk to everyone and slowly find out about the place to find it and what to do. Even while being pretty slow you have almost no chance in failing to find it in time. And once you found it, there is no time limit for the second goal and all locations can still be visited again.
It would be a shame to miss the best plot of the whole series.

Well, I'm just not a fan of those time trial things, and I didn't get the update when I had my copy of Fallout. I need to go back when I get the chance, but that'll be a while.

It does get repetitive, doesn't it?
The 'good' points I mentioned mostly have to do with game world ideas I liked but not as much their implementation.
And gameplay is definitely not one of this game's highlights.

It often felt that you have to play the game in a certain way to actually get somewhere, and that you have to know where to find items as otherwise you are seriously weak during half of the game, and constantly have to take breaks to recuperate.
