The music of Fallout 4: A dissappointment aswell

"Fallout 4 adds to the lore"
Was listening to some of the OST from fallout 4 and was thinking of how depressingly un-evocative it is. I'm not saying depressing music doesn't covey anything, I'm saying It doesn't work here, or rather it's not conveying a mood or really properly getting a unique feeling in a particular atmosphere where it fits. More like it's a cacophony of randomly composed sounds that just is applied to areas without any emotional or essences/care put into it. I would say that it has no "soul" put into it. Just a shallow husk that ironically represents the rest of the feeling you get while you play.

Just listen to a few tracks on the list for yourself and come to a conclusion. It's empty, Vapid and invokes nothing. You don't really think it sounds awesome or something that could come close to invoking it. You feel apathetic to it's existence and even worse probably turn it off altogether.

However Compare that to Witcher 3's soundtrack. In particular "Hunt or Be hunted" Keeps in line with the consistency of the setting and the pacing of the action. Evocative. It's like they want me to actually feel the tension?

Then of course, The most relevant examples are of course previous soundtracks of the other games in the series. I think it would be very difficult to match Mark Morgan's work. But i do think it would be plausible. One of my most enjoyed composed music of his for the fallouts was Children of the Cathederal. Really added creepy ambiance to a relevant situation and group of people. It fit the tone and the environment and added to the experience not hinder or be indifferent.

Oh well, Another disappointment or missed opportunity Bethesda made.

I actually disagree, I don't think FO4's soundtrack is the best I've ever heard or anything but it is most certainly not a "disappointment". I think it is far more atmospheric than FO3's SOT so with this I think they were actually moving in the right direction. It has a rather melancholy and somber tone to it, I find it fitting for the world of Fallout. The action music of FO4 sounds boring and generic though.

And maybe it is because I don't know the context of the scene where "Hunt or Be Hunted" is from but I found that track very generic. I've heard far better, from FO4 even.

inon zur makes "epic" music. it's ok, but it won't make an airy disorienting atmosphere like apeing aphex twin as mark morgan did. evidently, new vegas was smart enough to just reuse it, so i don't get the flock of true believers behind inon zur.

My perspective is the music in FO4 was, too up beat. NV had a great soundtrack and actually conformed to the region. I expected Boston to have some Irish songs or at least something based in the region.

Where the bananas is the Irish pub songs? Not in the pub that's for sure!

I also felt that the music was trying to hard, which is a abstract concept I know. I constantly felt that the developers wanted me to maintain a very specific mood throughout the game. Which doesn't make sense in a RPG considering that without highs and lows the world will feel generic and stale.

It is my belief that game music should complement the game and not detract from it. The design they pushed forward with was to blunt and forced.

Fallout 3's soundtrack had some really nice ambient tracks. Fallout 4 has a couple but most of it is too heroic in tone for my taste.

Mark Morgan's work on Wasteland 2 and the original Fallout games was darker and better in some areas.

disagree, i find fallout 4 music to fit of the very theme of fallout (let it go of the past, rebuild again , etc). even the supposed "serious" combat music is very uplifting, not once i find any of it that have depressing tone.

Fallout 4 had some decent music, but I got tired very quickly of the "Empowering Hero Theme" that would come up whenever you had a fight. It was annoying as all Hell and it just seemed to be extremely lame.
Fallout 3 had some nice pieces, I actually like the depressing and creepy nature of F3's OST. It adds more to that game in my opinion.

F1,2 and New Vegas had a lot of Mark Morgan tracks, and considering I'm a fan of Aphex Twin, I feel the combination of the two is something I'm a complete sucker for.
They had the best soundtracks followed closely by F3'S dark atmosphere.
I agree, F4 felt way to Epic, it didn't really fit the game at all, regardless of there being a few nice pieces.

The music comes during once in the main story and another when you fight the griffin towards the beginning of the game.

It feels very inconsistent in what it wants to convey then, Because the OST gives mixed feelings.

I thought the one music like the main menu screen music and the music that plays after you leave the place you killed and left with Mr. Flakes' rotting brain and see the big blimp thing fly by while the Brotherhood of Steel announce themselves which they would never do, sounded or came off as "epic".

I hated Fallout 4's soundtrack. Maybe it's because I barely heard any of it. I swear to God I heard that one fucking song with the bagpipes over and over and over again. It was basically the Johnny Guitar of Fallout 4, but unlike Johnny Guitar, which is on a radio I can turn off, I can't turn off the ambient music with losing all ambient music.

I think my game may have been busted but basically I only hear the bagpipe song and maybe like 3 or 4 other ambient tracks, all the time. That's it. I don't like the radio either because 90% of the songs on it are repeats from Fallout 3. It's embarrassing, why on Earth couldn't they get a bunch of new songs instead of just slapping the entire FO3 soundtrack on there?

Found the Bagpipe song I was thinking of, it's called "Still Standing", it's near the end of the soundtrack. It's one of the only songs I ever hear in the damn game.

Hm. How to explain... I find Fallout 4's OST pretty good, the problem is that it doesn't fit the world. It's more a fantasy OST than a sci-fi, post apocalyptic one, in my mind. Actually, I think that it's a first draft of the next elders scroll OST, just like "300 rise of an Empire" soundtrack was a first draft for "Mad Max".
And, oh dear, I hate, truly hate the fight music. It's way too heroic for the situations it plays with. And the music that plays when you are in Sanctuary is technically good, but it's sooo repetitive it gets frustrating.

However, I always liked the main theme, both in F3 and in F4. It's gritty yet heroic, and it's probably the only track that would actually work if implemented in the old Fallout titles. And the trailer music is pretty amazing, I think.
Finally, I found myself surprisingly moved by Diamond City's soundtrack. As much as I didn't like the city, or the game in general, this particular track had a weird, nostalgia thing on me that I can't describe. Hate when I hear Moe shouting about his swatters when the music plays.

Totally dissagree. I spend more time listening this soundtrack than playing actual game.

And like someone said earlier, this soundtrack is trying to add "feeling of hope" to the world and character, so I get what Inon wanted to do here.

What on earth are you talking about? Not only this cacophony doesn't fit into Fallout 4 itself but can't even stand against Skyrim's and FO3, FNV. This guy forgot how to use anything but piano? Because other instruments involved is unfitting at best. At worst it's music value somewhere at Grindcore.

Don't know about you but when I heard four ink-spots-ish accords aftet arriving in Sanctunary Hills from V111, my ears rolled into a tube.

You state your point, I state mine how I feel about F4 OST and TBH I don't see any room here for middle ground/consensus. Sry.

I honestly can't remember a single song from Fallout 4, heck I remember fan made songs more than any song in Farcryout 4.

The music was so bland, so generic i remember dragonborn song from skyrim better. Oh wait I remember atom bomb baby because I watched the trailer like ten times.

So in short Farcryout fails to have any memorable songs.

Except the trailer orchestral song and the menu theme, don't you think ? I agree that 99% of the OST is bland as hell, but these two tracks are a bit of redeeming quality, for they are the only ones which could fit the old titles as well, don't you think ?

Oh yeah that one too. I forgot about it. It was quite good all things considered. It fit the trailer and had a nice ring to it. I tend to skip main menu so I forgot it was there. Still that makes 2 good songs while the rest was bland. One thing that irked me to no end was the amount of songs in the game. There were just too few of them and it got tiring listening to the same thing over and over again. That said it is better than johny guitar all the time.
