Mafia III

So who is going to be picking up this one?

I'm really excited about the concept.

The chance of shooting up the Ku Klux Klan via Grand Theft Auto mini-game is something I've looked forward to for a very long time.

I don't have the money atm. Fucking Dishonored 2 and its comics and novels, making me spend my money.

But I could "demo" the game...

Mafia was awesome, one of the better games of its time.
Mafia II was a stupid embarassment, everything was overdone "I herd u liek mafia so we put mafia in the mafia so you can mafia while you mafia" and such

I have little interest in franchises once them dumb themselves like this, but hey, maybe they've undumbed since then. I doubt it though

What does this have to do with the Mafia? If they wanted to make a game about black organized crime, they could have just done so, Italians don't fit into the deep south atmosphere anyway.

As for the game mechanics, unless they learned a lot from Mafia 2 (which felt like a GTA IV mod), it's just going to suck. Mafia games aren't supposed to be about street shootouts in fast cars, or big heists (which are only ever done as pre-scripted missions). It's called organized crime, darn it, why can't they make organization part of the gameplay?

I liked that old mafia game, before the "Mafia"-series, which I don't remember what is called, and which is impossible to try to google, "game, about, mafia" good luck with that

but it actually did focus primarily on organization, planning, well, the logistics of it. It had a flaw that many algorithm-based games did, early on, in that unless you win it quickly, it becomes unwinnable. Which is a pity, and the reason I'm not really looking it up for nostalgia reasons. I never played it that much, cus I only played it at a friend of mine's

the concept though was awesome, you recruit, you organize, you plan orders, and so on, instead of 3D-shoot a bunch of people

Perhaps buy the game, play an hour and 53 minutes, and then if you don't like it get a refund?

That's what I call demoing games anyway.
Yeah. But whenever I give a negative review with 1h55min clocked in all I get are fanboys telling me I need x hours minimum to make a fair assessment. I play 5/6 hours, if I don't like it I uninstall. If I like it, I buy it or directly support the dev with Patreon. Steam has enough money anyways.

Well, the big issue with Mafia III being that the Mafia isn't what you belong to but what you oppose. It's set in the 1960s with you as Lincoln Clay, a Black Vietnam veteran who returns to New Orleans (sorry, NEW BORDEAUX) where Lincoln's adopted family in the Black Mob is massacred by the Italian Mafia so they can put white gangsters in charge of their territory (as well as steal a heist). Which is notably, part of the plot of the movie Shaft.

Lincoln proceeds to gather the gangs which hate the Italian mafia in the Irish and Haitian mobs plus, well, part of the Italian mob to wipe out the guys who killed his loved ones. It's complicated, also, by the fact the Italian mob has made an alliance with the Southern Union (a.k.a KKK) which makes no damned sense historically but allows you to work against both.

The game is controversial because the writers include hate speech against your character.

Ehhh, it's a bit more complicated than that. One of the controversial but historically accurate elements is that Lincoln Clay starts building the modern criminal gang which starts to replace the Italian mafia around this time period. RICO and other activities weakened the Italian mob enough that groups they had firmly oppressed rose up to form their own syndicates.

Which would be giving them too much credit except for the fact they've mentioned this is an element they're dealing with. This is the end of the Mafia and the rise of the modern Cartel and Syndicates.

Sounds like Omerta.

Hmmm, from screen shots it looks kind of similar, but we're talking way further back in time here, probably the beginning of 3D rendering
I'll make another heroic effort, Google, here I come... :(

Ah, Gangsters!

look at the little chalk drawings, so adorable!

Yeah it does look quite good. I mean it really a toss up between this, battlefield one for me. I also want to get don bradman cricket but thats only because i'm a massive cricket fan. I don't think about getting battlefeild one at all because its so not realstic but then I watched the campaigne trailer and yeah it looks pretty good and even though its not massively realistic stuff like the tank gameplay looks almost to good to miss out on. I mean what other game lets you drive a ww1 tank.

I mean if there where more rifles and it showed other battle other than from 1918 the yeah it be an insta buy but who knows mafia 3 is still a good shout though very much enjoyed mafia 2 however the story was't that long

I've picked up my copy of Mafia III and have been playing it for the past few hours. I've got to say they've really managed to make an incredibly atmospheric game. The whole idea this is a fictionalized documentary about Lincoln Clay in the 21st century is a great idea. The soundtrack is spectacular, the storyline so far, and I'm enjoying the fact it's not just a clone of Grand Theft Auto but some weird hybrid of Grand Theft Auto and Hitman.

They also make an excellent choice in terms of building your relationship to the Black Mob which we know gets wiped out in the Heist. Rather than start you off with the lengthy (boring) parts, you begin with the heist then flashback to see how you got there. You get to spend time with the characters in order to develop an attachment to them even though you know they're all going to get wiped out.

Gotta admit, 2K instead of protecting Mafia III with denuvo, used the best solution possible - mediocre video game near zero people actually giving a fuck thus slow D/L speed.

We had a larger line in my area than Fallout 4. It also downloaded pretty damn fast on my console.

How does this game differentiate from GTA, or a bunch of similar open world games? The first one upon release was a stark difference from GTA at the time, as it had realistic driving and shooting mechanics (for that type of game), plus a beautiful city. I was awed by how good the game looked (looked like real life after playing driver 2) and how solid, un-arcadish the mechanics felt, there was nothing like that at the time. When mafia 2 came out it really had nothing new to offer and actually regressed from the first one in gameplay and story. This seems like another spoon of the same, with a more terrible interface. At least other games like Watch Dogs 2 have interesting mechanics going for them.

Interestingly enough, Mafia III has the option of adjusting your driving mechanics so you can play with the "Realistic" driving mechanics of previous games or "Normal" which is GTA. It also does the same thing with shooting. You can also choose to remove the hate-speech from the game and numerous other very detailed choices for play styles. The shooting style is not at all cinematic which is interesting as a few shots and you're dead, which requires you to make use of stealth a lot.

I mentioned it's a combination of Hitman and GTA with the primary mechanic being sneaking around open-world levels and using takedowns to remove opponents or avoid them versus shooting them down. Ammunition is also oddly scarce in the game so you have to pull your shots.

The world is absolutely beautiful and if not up to GTA V's level then is certainly very lovely with a saturated movie-esque feel.
