Horribly disappointed in Fallout Restoration Project

Cyberyn

First time out of the vault
Just installed Fallout 2 and The Restoration Project, only to find out that the game-breaking "dead bodies block burst shots" bug is still present.

Well, I guess it's time to uninstall Fallout 2 and forget about it forever, as obviously no one is capable of fixing that game-breaking bug.

Huh, I don't think I ever encountered this bug... But then I rarely used burst weapons, so that might be it.
I guess the bug is buried too deeply in the engine to fix it. Seriously annoying, maybe some modder or programmer knows more about it...

Sfall is supposed to have an option for that. Or at least it was supposed to have it, I can't remember if it was removed for whatever reason and I haven't played the game for a while now.

EDIT: Ok I quickly checked my Fallout 2 installation and checked the Sfall ddraw.ini and found the option:
;Adjust how corpses effect line of fire
;Set to 1 to apply the same rules to bursts as to complete misses
;Set to 2 to completely block corpses from absorbing fire
CorpseLineOfFireFix=0
That fix has been in Sfall for 7 years now ;-)

It's not a bug in the sense that appears randomly, it appears every single time. Burst damage goes from average 30-50 with basic SMG to 0-5, if there is any dead body between you and the target, no matter the distance.

It is truly astonishing how developers can so completely degrade a game from one sequel to the next, there was no such bug in Fallout 1.

Oh well, I guess it was easy to fix after all :D

Well, I didn't encounter it in the sense that I apparently never really used a burst weapon with a corpse in the way. Just never happened. So did @Risewild's post fix your issue?

I don't know what he is talking about, and I'm not gonna scavenge internet for another half-assing attempt to fix this.

Restoration Project was supposed to be the ultimate collection of bug fixes and content restoration, yet it failed to fix the single most game-breaking bug in the entire game. That speaks for itself.

Alright. I think the basic installation of the RP leaves many things as they were in the vanilla game. I guess the corpses blocking burst fire was seen as a feature? Anyway, RP should contain many SFall features, so could you check your ddraw.ini in your Fallout 2 folder for the line "CorpseLineOfFireFix=0"? I'm still at work, so I can't check my own installation right now. Try setting the value to 2, if I understood it correctly that should prevent corpses from absorbing any fire.

Update your sfall to 3.6 or above. sfall DLLs included in both FO2 GOG/Steam release and RP 2.3.3 are older ones (3.2a and 3.3a).
v3.6
>Rewrote CorpseLineOfFireFix to fix the conflict with ToHit hooks and the bug that corpse in the same hex as target still absorbs bullets
The new CorpseLineOfFireFix has simpler setting and will prevent corpses from blocking bullets completely.

I don't have any "sfall", what are you talking about?
I have GOG Fallout 2 and RP 2.3.3, that's it.

So, I should download this and overwrite it over the default folder?
And that should fix it?
Only overwrite the ddraw.dll.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are using a mod that included sfall already (e.g. killap's unofficial patch or RP, etc.) then that mod has probably included a custom modified ddraw.ini. In that case, overwriting it with sfall's vannila ddraw.ini will be likely break your game. Instead, only overwrite ddraw.dll, and keep the mods existing copy of ddraw.ini. (Or, if you know what you're doing, you can merge them together by hand.)

May I ask something, for curiosity? This bug is related to this "Restoration Project", or, it was a Fallout 2 bug?

It was a forever broken "feature" in Fallout 2, from F2 wiki:
all the burst weapons in Fallout 2 suffer from a bug whereby dead creatures obstruct burst fire as if they were standing up. Thus if a dead entity is located between the player and the intended target of his/her burst fire, that dead entity will block the majority of the rounds fired.

I'm still amazed that a game could be released in such condition, and never officially fixed.

that's incredible. Neve imagined such a thing (and I've played Fallout 2 A FUCKIN LOT). But I've always prefered aimed single shot in the eyes.

The Fallout 2 was programmed by other people, I think. The main FO1 programmer was assigned to another project.

That bug never bother me because I usually play with a melee or unarmed character. But I remember being surprised that bug existed when I read on Sfall years ago that it got a fix for it. :aiee:
@Cyberyn did the new ddraw.ini fixed it for you? :postviper:

I can confirm it exists it's no bs, this bug happened multiple times to me, in many different playthroughs.
Apparently there's no way to get completely rid of it, supposedly Sfall helps so give it a try I guess. I have this mod but the bug still happens, so don't get your hopes up.
You can make the game less frustrating if you start acting like a save scummer. Save before every single fight in the game, if the bug occurs you can press load game. I also don't remember this ever happening in the first Fallout.

I've tested the rewritten fix for about a dozen times with different scenario setups. Do you still have the issue with newer (3.6 or later) version of sfall?
