It really depends on what's going on with the games. Usually by then big corporations see that 2 other games of the same name worked and now it's time to get those hooked players and reel in their wallets. Dead Space 3 comes to mind.

Keep in mind this does not apply to your mainstays. Your Mario, Zelda, Castlevania...this is more of a modern thing. Tomb Raider 3, Twisted Metal 3, Resident Evil 3...
