    why not nuclear?

Space is cold, but it is also devoid of any matter. It would take about one hour for your body to reach freezing point in space. That's because there are no atoms or molecules (like in cold air) to conduct heat away from you. This means the only means to lose heat in space is through the...

Is that what that was? I thought it was a giant catapult.

what was before the 50s ?

Given the rate of exponential technological development, i think that it is as difficult to predict the future 10 years from now, as it was to predict the future for the next 50years, 50 years ago.

    why not nuclear?

What do you mean? For large ships and submarines, nuclear is the way to go.

    why not nuclear?

Weight is no problem... but inertia is. The ship still has a huge MASS. I was wrong to say weight. Not as primary coolant. But water still spins the turbines - well steam. Yeah, but with nukes you get the same thing quicker, and in a simpler package.

    why not nuclear?

Because generating electricity from a nuclear reactor in space would mean basically a whole nuclear power plant in orbit: water, turbines, nuclear reactor shielding, nuclear reactor itself, all this made to work in zero G and shielded from the outside as well (water for cooling the reactor...

    why not nuclear?

If only they discovered how to use uranium in a reactor in the 19th century. Then colonial powers would've used it without fear to make reactors using of course, slave labour in the mines and all that. Now we'd have a century or so of nuclear power, and no fossil fuel pollution or global...

    2012 apocalypse!!!

I think the generators have grounding. It's very easy, as far as i know, to protect against surges. And because the wires won't be taken down because of a solar storm, power is back online as soon as the switches are turned back on.

    2012 apocalypse!!!

Yeah, i know about that... :D i'm collaborating with EURONEAR project, as do some of my collegues at uni, in trying to find or redescover Near Earth Asteroids, but i was wondering more along the lines of hey, i am a superpower and i don't have nukes. I'll just threaten the world that i'll...

    2012 apocalypse!!!

Yeah, power outage doesn't seem that scary. I grew up in a place where the lights would go out once every few months. Sometimes every day. Asteroid fucking us up seems far more cool. But where could we find such an asteroid?

    2012 apocalypse!!!

We now have a few satellites whose job is to monitor the sun. Lots of scientists check the images, because they are freely shared. I've used some of those images myself, and they are really easy to obtain. That being said, i don't know how a solar erruption can be missed noewadays, when no...
