They really aren't temps in the normal sense of the word. Normally, a temp is brought in until a specific criteria is met (90 days, a perm employees returns, project is released, etc). At blizzard, all QA staff start off as a "temp" for 90 days, then, if they display a high amount of "blizzard spirit" they become perm. Skill or ability is not an issue in becoming perm.
These temps are put through a form of blizzard "plebe" training. Like a military boot camp, you are verbally berated by "upper class men" to weed out the disloyal. In fact, according to one upper manager, if he had his way, every single employee would be forced to go through this.
I wouldn't have minded the verbal abuse, if there was a golden rainbow on the other side. However, when I discovered that advancement was not based on your ability but on who knows you, I became quite disillusioned.
