.223 pistol origins

I will admit that even though I have Blade Runner on DVD, I have only watched it twice, and I did not make the connection between the .233 handgun in Fallout and Bladerunner. Until I saw the .233 pic from Fallout in the article, I hadn't even noticed the dual triggers.

Thanks for the writeup, SA.

I also recognised the .233 pistol as being inspired by Blade Runner. I thought it might just be an easier way for the prop department to make a nice looking futuristic pistol, i.e. mixing major components of real firearms. I read the book many years later, which strongly supports SuAside's theory.

Nice job.

Indeed, very nice article, but...

Those sounds only appeared when replicants were shot (with one exceptio- Pris). For me it's only a strange bullet penetration sound.

what version of the DVD do you have? the original or the director's cut?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I have the theatrical release version. It is possible they touched up other things besides removing the narration. Since, at least to me, it just sounds like a gunshot.

But who knows. :D

well, seeing as the directors cut was released in '92, that makes it the 'definite' version for me. i saw the original (europen) release version of '82 too (on TV), but i was way too young to remember trivial things like how the gunshot sounds.

i'm getting the collectors edition of the Final Cut though (out by the end of the year) and that includes the original releases (both US & international), so i'll be able to tell then.

but as it looks now, the different interpretations look to be from Director's Cut sound effects ('92) vs the american theatrical release sound effects ('82).

I would be interested in what you think when you get the theatrical release version.

BTW, I saw the original in the theaters in 82 and have loved the movie ever since, so to me, it is the definitive one. But to each his own. :D

Hmmm I've never seen the 82 theatrical release... I don't know if I'd like the voice-over ...

I vividly remember seeing BR the first time in 24mx10m scope 2.35 theater when the Director's Cut was released \o/

I admit most of the narration is not needed, but there was, IIRC, two spots where I think it was needed. The biggie to me was when Deckard was watching Roy die, and then when he does you get the guilt trip narration. Without it, to me at least, he just looks relieved at not dying and not having second thoughts on the meaning of life and on his profession. :D

IIRC, the 82 - 92 international release did not have the narration except at the end. But I am not sure, never having seen it.

Watched it last night. The sound seems to be a regular gunshot, then, AFTER THE BULLET HAS EXITED LEON, makes a screeching sound. I think it is quite possibly be a ricochet.
