50 Greatest Characters of all time

They choose two characters from an over rated Final fantasy game (cloud and sephiroth who is so paper thin at this point little boys wielding keys beat him up.

The saddest part for me was Lara Croft scoring above Link

this list is far from what I would make.
they didn't even choose best characters from games. Nameless One over Morte? Fallout boy over many great characters in Fallout world? the list goes on....

Crowbars ain't cool, Half-Life 2 is overrated trash, and Gordon Freeman is about as badass as a brick wall.
There were crowbars and Gordon Freeman before Half-Life 2.
Oh but of course, there's no such thing as Half-Life 1 now is there? :)

I do agree on the brick wall part though, a lot of people are too content with iconic and popular characters being "the best of all time" rather than characters with actual personalities. Gordon Freeman (much like the Doomguy) is just a slate to project your personality onto while you play the games, your character doesn't have the power to speak, thus he won't say anything you wouldn't say.

Mario, Link, Master Chief, Gordon Freeman = Iconic, but have almost no personality
SHODAN, Guybrush Threepwood, The Nameless One = Well developed characters

I always thought Doomguy showed his personality by being manly enough to try and punch the cyberdemon to death.
:V

HK-47 is much too low on the list, meatbags.

I have a hard time justifying Gordon being so high up to be honest, even though I definitely like Half Life. What makes him so special as a character? You don't get to know anything about his thoughts or motives or anything at all apart from his profession, education and melee weapon preferences. Might as well put the space marine from Doom in there. Ok that might be a stretch.

I would have put Tommy Versetti in there somewhere I think. That lovely homocidal maniac.

there are some very good picks in there, but like others have said: they should've made one list for iconic characters and one for well written characters.

YOU ARE HUGE! THAT MEANS YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS! RIP AND TEAR!

God I love that Doom comic.

Calling Vault Boy a character and ranking him with the rest is a stretch, as is the Unreal Announcer. Surprised to see Alice and Dirk the Daring make the list. All in all an interesting mix of characters in the list, with the expected cringeworthy fellows and the unexpected and more obscure characters.

Speaking in broad strokes, I'd say that FFVII has a well designed story and characters (most of them, Yuffie doesn't get much character development and is the worst), whether or not the writing is very good is an entirely different matter. I don't think that Sephiroth was the best designed character in the game, in fact Cloud probably was. Aerith would be a justifiable choice as well due to the plot role that her character played. I do agree that the game is overrated though but it's hype has caused a backlash as well with people underrating it due to it's hype. All that said, they have a justifiable place on the list due to them being icons of the series (the reason a large number of the characters make the list).

I stand by my assertion that the lack of criteria that compliment each other make this list a useless mess but the character choices make me wish that they had actually split it into two lists.

You mean the first fully mainstream female protagonist in PC gaming is less important than an asswipe in green pajamas?

Mrs Pacman was also a mainstream female protagonist.

Nope, they put Mr. X from Resident Evil 2 in there.

It's an unexpected choice since everyone seems to fucking love the Nemesis, but thinking back on it, Mr X scared me ten billion times more than Nemesis ever did.

It's probably because Nemesis was the big draw to RE3 whereas Mr. X was a secret on your second playthrough.

Most of the list was garbage to me, but glad to see that Agent 47, Snake made it to the list...although they were too low on it.

The list was pretty flawed anyway, for example:

Even though the Vault Boy isn't that significant character, just a logo, he actually does have a personality...or in fact, multiple personalities in the perk section. Those pics are fun to look at :D
As for the "Unknown announcer"...

Seriously, what the fuck?!
He's just a guy who says stupid pharses like "HEADSHOT!!!!1" and "MONSTER-KILL!!!!1one" just to make the player feel like a big man... don't know what logic that makes, but the announcer shouldn't even be considered as a character, therefore not making an appearance on this list. And Master Chief isn't really that deep character neither and he's in the Top 10 or something? Jesus...
