A new Metroid game

Nintendo has Team Ninja (from Ninja Gaiden fame) working on a new Metroid game, visually it looks a lot more like the 2D games regarding the looks of enemies and so on.

I have always been a fan of the Metroid games and I liked the Prime series, but I can't help but to worry a little bit after having watched this movie clip.

It seemed Retro somehow got the feel like even though it was a bit more cinematic in the last game, but this feels more like an action game rather than an adventure exploration action game.

Hope time will prove me wrong.

I agree, it seems to have too much focus on action and cinematics for Metroid game.
I can smell the quick time events from a mile away.

Calling it a new "edgier title," Nintendo has announced Metroid: Other M.
This did nothing to quell my fears either.

And what's with the stupid title?

And seriously, what's with the "remember me?" guy?!

The worst travesty I see are those cut scenes. I mean really. Metroid didn't need any kind of narrative to make it great. Super Metroid being the peak of the series, they really need to look how they worked the story in. It was quick, but left you to fill in the blanks and they pulled that off very well. Kraid and Ridley making their returns you could kind of figure out what was going on.

Metroid was really about the exploration first, bang bang second and story a distant third really. It gave the game a feeling desolance to it. Letting you feel alone. Watching that trailer made me feel as though the wicked bad space marines with their guns will fuck something up and Samus will fix it......blah blah blah we've all seen it in Halo.

But not of Ninja Gaiden fame, as most of them have quit Tecmo. It'll be a totally different Team Ninja.

I'd say that Metroid was about figuring out where to go (not really exploration) and killing stuff first (they were tied as the two were intertwined) with story being their for the sake of servicing the game. I haven't played the Prime games yet but I'd be surprised if they were much different and I don't see anything in this that looks out of place in a Metroid game. I have no problem with cutscenes when they are done correctly (Super Metroid had a handful) but they need to keep them brief and not pull a MGS with 30 minute cutscenes (more than a couple minutes in a Metroid game would probably be too long). We'll have to see on the gameplay, TPS games with target locking can be hard to do right so my biggest concern is with the gameplay. Still, it's nice that it looks like it might be a more traditional Metroid game but I'd really like them to make another 2D one for console (follow Capcom's lead with MMX8 to a degree) as the gameplay is entirely different in 2D and 3D action platformers.

There is this character from an old Super Metroid comic that appeared in Nintendo Power magazine called Houston Armstrong, he is suppose to be another space hunter but in the comic he is Caucasian and has a beard.

Most people hated the character and thought the comic was poor.

I honestly hope they aren't going to put in the character as yet.

The first Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games of all time, which is why this Other M shit looks like milky diarhea to me.

I hated everything about what I saw. Starting with the 10 year old looking Samus (or Other Samus or whoever that boy was), to the awkward black dude with "Remember Me?" No I don't and I'd like to keep it that way. I mean WTF?

Those ridiculous fight scenes looked completely out of place for a Metroid game and so were the cutscenes.

The dumbest title ever tops things off nicely as well. Great job, count on Team Ninja to fuck things up.

I was under the impression, from some of my friend's speculation mostly, he was the dead space marine fellow just before you faught Kraid in Super Metroid.

Nah, such a connection has never been implied, it is something a lot of fans who like Armstrong like to make up.
In truth the character has no story importance whatsoever, they just put him there for atmosphere.

Well then. That gives me certain creative libteries. I've had ideas about that particular character involving The Inferno by Dante Alighieri.
Just a fan story set in the Metroid universe.
It's going to be crappy but it wouldn't be a fan fic if it wasn't. ;)

Hello maximaz,

They have gone the Japanese route with Other M, using a style closer to that of Super Metroid, Zero Mission and so on for the characters, enemies and background rather than handling the Western look of Retro.

One of the problems with that is that Japanese tend to 'dollify' female protagonists like Samus.
Something similar happened in Prime 2 and 3 while Samus in 1 looked more realistic.

What I am worried about is that they are going to put a load of Japanese clichés in the storyline and that the storyline will have the overhand rather than being a background thing.

Another fear is that they will make the series more action/quick time events focused.

Edit:

I found an interview with the staff of Other M

Dammit, Metroid is starting to become like Halo and Metal Gear with its prequels and ret cons, when is Nintendo finally going to make a sequel to Fusion.

Hehehe...
I thought it was Dark Samus from the MP series at first.
Nearly fell off my chair laughing when he showed that big smile tho'
OMFG WHATS THAT NIGGA DOIN!?

Ah, another Metroid game.

I remember prime. I thought it was... okay. It wasn't really up my all (not a massive FPS fan by the way).

However, I loved Super Metroid. Pretty much my favorite in the entire series.

And Team Ninja making it?

And I thought I'd seen it all in the world of gaming.

I just hope they don't fuck it up... too much.

.

I played an older SNES Metroid game, which I loved, and I don't remember it being Japanese, as you describe it, or having any silly talking NPC's.

I also only played the first Prime. I stopped playing Prime 2 half-way through (just didn't like it for some reason), and I don't have a Wii so no Prime 3.

I guess I don't know Metroid like you do but it just honestly looks like shit to me personally, compared to the Metroid I know and love.

Metroid Prime was not an FPS. It certainly looked like it but it's a small part of the actual game.

Man, did it really look that bad? I guess the problem is that I thought all the Prime games were really boring but I thought this looked like a fun game.

The action looked good and I thought it would be interesting to see a game in one of Nintendo's big three actually place emphasis on a story.

Perhaps it shouldn't be a Metroid game as it does move away from it's main elements, but given the fact that it's not developed internally by Nintendo, I assumed it was just a spin-off title, so it could BE in a genre different than adventure. A la FOT to FO.

I had a couple quick bouts of the Prime series games at display booths at EB. However my fondness for the series still lies with Super Metroid. I played the Nes metroid years earlier but Super Metroid at the time really struck me as a standout game. I may just have to start up a new game.

As for this new one, it looks too shiny. I am a grappling hook master by the way.

Some of it looks pretty nice, some not so nice. I hope they capture that feeling of loneliness that you could feel, especially when walking around in the Prime games. The intro music felt rather Metroid, at least, always something :)

You guys can tell a lot from one movie. I never liked Metroid Prime very much :?. It just felt tedious for some reason.
