A Real-life Adventurous Job

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
If you were to pick a job or occupation that could be the closest thing in real life to being an adventurer what would you pick and why?

I would say a big rig truck driver. The eighteen wheelers that own the road. Why? First if your a driver you travel a lot to all sorts of different locations often on "convoy" missions. You spend the night on the road or if in town at hotel (inn) and often drop by the bar (pub) for information about jobs and to meet with fellow drivers. Most drivers are armed and often have their own lingo. Their rigs (armor) are often stylized for them personally and every driver has numerous stories (false or exxagerated) about what they've done in their careers.

Now you go.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

I'd have to say if I could be an adventurer in real life today I would be one of those bounty hunters thats hired to track down felons or people who haven't paid someone their money. Kinda like that guy on "All About The Benjamins" lol.

I don't quite know what you mean when you say 'adventurer'. If you mean a small group of people who travel a lot, have distinctive equipment and are commonly at risk, then the modern equivalent is probably a journalist. To be more precise, a foreign or war correspondent who works independently, like the reporters on Dateline on Australian TV, armed with a camera, an Australian accent and their quick wits. They have a wide variety of experiences and an adventurous (and high stress) working life.

Other such jobs include biologists exploring the seas, rainforests or other natural habitats for new species of flora and fauna and of course there is the final frontier of space. Astronauts are some modern-day adventurers. There are probably many more.

I prefer to stay in sunny Sydney though. My real life adventuring may only involve discovering new things in science, adventurous in its own way.

I've always wanted to go to Austrailia! But than I saw Open Water which as corny as it was scared me away from going scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef :P. I would so hate being all alone in the middle of the ocean with no boat or raft of any kind, not knowing whats under you in water like that is just scary! :S

Damnit, TVD, why did you take cheque from Targem Games' PR? Don't you know Hard Truck will suck ass?

Seriously, though, I'd like to be an archeologist, just like Indy!

What do you mean, "real archeologists are not like that"?

A neat job would be being a hitman:
- no PR problems
- flexible hours
- travel to exotic places
- find out new and exciting way to kill time and people
yup! that would be nice.

I'd be a fuckin' pimp, bro, and I would explore all of the U-N-E-X-P-L-O-R-E-D regions of my sexy hoes. That's right, bro. Hell yeah. I would venture inside them dark caves and fight the friggin' shit and stuff, and explore the whole goddamn area. That's right, my man. I'd be a 21st century pussy explorer and shit. Know what I'm saying? I'd put on my leather booths and just go G-E-O-L-O-G-I-C-A-L on some Thai arse and shit. Oh yeah. Me and my MacGyver knife would definitely wack the pussies. We'd go scavenging for teh juice, man. Hell yeah.

I'm sorry...

Me i would be a crazy traveller. i would travel over europe alone and only in the forrests, and then i would write a book about it and make milllions.

One could always become a mercenary. Lot's of business in private military companies these days-
Private Military Corporations
From SourceWatch
Private military corporations, private military firms, private military companies, military services providers, the privatized military industry are all attempts to label the phenomena of private companies offering services on the world market that have normally been duties of national military forces.[1] (http://www.privatemilitary.org/definition.html) Every service caters to security, and the growing need for security in a world wrought with differing economic, strategic, and military interests has provided a marketplace that is rapidly expanding.

These services include risk advisory, training of local forces, armed site security, cash transport, intelligence services, workplace and building security, war zone security needs, weapons procurement, personnel and budget vetting, armed support, air support, logistical support, maritime security, cyber security, weapons destruction, prisons, surveillance, psychological warfare, propaganda tactics, covert operations and investigations.

The companies of today are used by governments, corporations, humanitarian groups and NGOs, media personnel, and the UN. Private military contractors are the second largest force in Iraq with over twenty thousand active personnel in the country. The industry overall is growing with over $100 billion in annual contracts, relying on war as the marketplace.

The single largest issue introduced by the evolution of military services by the private sector is the degree to which corporations are now transcending the power of governments, rising as an influential variable within international and regional diplomacy, and redefining sovereignty in the 21st century.

Exotic travel, high pay and heavy weapons?

Nah- I think I would rather be a foreign correspondent or jewel thief.

Damn it, welsh! That's my idea!
The foreign Legion and stuff, you know?
Yes, the mercenary is probably the closest thing to being an RPG adventurer.
Although, being a thief gets near that...
I don't think there's anything legal that resembles the "adventurer".

How about being a game keeper in one of the big national parks in Africa? A lot of poacher hunting, always carry a gun, interact with wild and dangerous animals, sleep outside and never be sure if "they" are going to build a dam, a motorway, a Sun City or anything similar to ruin your workplace.

I think being a ranger would be kewl out in a forest. I've always wanted to live in one of those ranger outposts lol.

You broke the quote function there.

Also, "kewl" is actually spelt "cool". Whilst using the word will still make you look moronic, it will be to a much lesser extent if you spell it correctly.

Just trying to help.

As for an adventurous job, how about an NHS dentist? I'm sure they see some pretty unusual stuff.

I'm sorry thats just a regional way of writing it here. Is that cool? And sorry about that quote thing, I'm new and well honestly I don't know how to quote. I thought that was how you quote something? :S

try:

Code:
[quote]*text*[/quote]
or
Code:
[quote="user name"]*text*[/quote]

Also, you should use the "preview" feature to check that it is correct (and that your post makes sense, does not contain typos etc.).

I would retire to the backlands of Asia, learn mystical martial arts from a wise sage, and go about the world enlightened, helping people who needed my aid, and thwarting evil-doers everywhere.

Yeah, that would be nice. To be the equivalent of a near-mystical fighting monk with complete inner peace and wisdom.

Well if we are going by D&D, yeah, that is what a monk is, Welsh.

As for smuggler...could be fun. Going to go be a 'coyote' Welsh?

1. I want a blackwater tshirt. coooool

2. Truck drivers aren't really too great. First, you have low pay, and you don't really get to see your family. They are also usually red necks and have redneck families.

Next, you spend a lot of time on the road alone, and you have deadlines if you work for a major company, so sometimes you have to haul ass and don't have much time for fun.
