All About Arcanum

Man I could not get into this game mainly because of the combat system. I don't know what's going on with that thing, it's a mess if you ask me. The game is a little too complicated as well but maybe it's worth understanding.
I am planning to try playing it again since I like the setting and the atmosphere. I knew I had to play it to the end ever since I saw the intro clip of that armored guy with the gun.

turn-based is too easy and real time is too annoying. :)

still an awesome game though.

I've always been curious about Arcanum, but have never had the time to play it. It sounds like I could learn a lot from it.

Well, only if you need a change from 'the Omega Syndrome' or Fallout, but yes, it is a good game. I give it a thumbs up.

I bought Arcanum in 2001, but I really didn't get into it back then.

I just installed Arcanum for the millionth time. It is still really hard for me to get into the game. I don't know why, because I find the setting interesting etc. There is just something that pushes me away from the game.

Of course there's lotsa annoying things, like the fact that I am having shitload of those fucking sudden-deaths all the time, followed by cursing and loading savegames.

I could beat Fallout when I was a 12-year-old. I wonder why Arcanum seems to be so impossible for me.

EDIT:

Okay, now I've played it several hours and I'm actually starting to get hang of it. This could turn out to be one of the best gaming experience I've ever had.

MORE EDIT:

Goddammit, I've kept playing it and I have to say it rocks the living shit out of... well, everything. Why the hell didn't I get it earlier?

I just bought this through amazon recently and have been having the same problem of not getting into the game. The manual still frightens me a little. But hopefully I'll go crazy for it in the coming days.

Just wait until you reach the Black Mountain Mines, you will be ready to put down the game for another six years. :D

I was interesting in Arcanum during the game's development, and was sold when they released the demo. Lukan the Witless is the perfect example of what attracted me to the game. Decent writing (a step above stock BioWare comedy characters) and a large number of options. You can simply pay his toll, you can steal the key from him, you can take his quest to destroy the bridge materials, you can simply kill him (and if that is too tough you can recruit Sogg Mead Mug to help), or you can convince him to leave.

plenty of ways to get around difficulties though if you know the tricks... (even for stuff where you have no other way but to fight)

The Black Mountain Mines are simply badly designed. Nearly all advice on how to get through them is based on meta-gaming.

well, if you go into a bunch of mines from which a shitload of hired investigators have never returned, you'd better make sure you're ready to handle whatever is inthere?

Don't make excuses for poor design. Did anyone with a melee character/followers know to bring the extra weapons they will need on their first time through the BMM without reading it elsewhere? After the previous dungeons encountered by the player, is there any internal indication how large the BMM are?

mages don't really. neither do techies with fireaxes or guns ;)

but ok, true, pretty bad design on thatone.

This game is great the only problem i had was my indecisiveness. I would play as a human thief then half way deiced that I want to play as a summoner and so fourth. Never really liked playing a tech their only a few items wroth crafting others are just simpler to buy.

Tannhauser, the BBM was quite awful... I had to keep running away from the caves and coming back for a few times because I always needed new equipment

But, yeah... I think I am now nearing the end in Arcanum and I must say that I've enjoyed the journey. I haven't had time to play it for a few last weeks now, but after I graduate in a couple of weeks, I am definitely going to finish it. Yay!

what?

healing & fatigue pots, dual +dex rings, fast electrical swords (very good at the beginning of the game), fireaxe (simply rocks and doesn't take damage from hitting golems), guns, helmet with increased PE (instead of the usual -dex for restricted vision), grenades, and so on and so forth?

you sure you actually played this game?

Playing it again. Good deal into the game and I have to say it really is the shit. After Shrouded Hills the game got a LOT better. I'm amazed at how similar it is to Fallout too.

Also, after playing around with the combat and really understanding it, it's not bad at all (in turn based). Overall, I'm really glad I gave it another chance, it's like Fallout 3 minus the setting.

Yes and you can buy/find/steal that or have NPCs craft it for your. walking around with junk in my inventory was never my thing. i actually did enjoyed the explosives in that game.

The carcanum mod changed some gameplay element and let you choose the gamerule (changing the monster's hp, random encounter, difficulty).
Personally, I think the mod feels a bit like Diablo (dungeon exploring and non-stop violence hack-and-slash). But it's still fun to play with.

Too bad elephant gun is a rare item in the mod

After reading about this games I decided to try it out , the installation went well & I updated it to version 1.0.7.4. But after that nothing...tried all the compatibility mode the game just wont start :-(. guess I will never have the joy of playing this game, what a sad sad day this is for me.
