Amsterdam - cheap hotels

Tomorrow I have to go to Amsterdam, and since I have to go by train and it'll take hours to get there, I was planning on spending the night there and returning home the next day. Problem is cash, though. I really don't want to spend hundreds of Euros for a bed and a bad breakfast. So any Dutchies here who know Amsterdam really well and know where I can find a cheap but nice hotel?

I did Google it, but I only found the big ones...

When I was there last summer I stayed at the White Tulip in downtown Amsterdam, on this list: http://www.hostel.com/en/nl.am.html

As you can see by its rating, its nothing much, but it had hot water, was fairly clean, and gave a deep discount at the Irish bar on the first floor for breakfast and drinks. It didn't have a curfew either.

It was memorable because out my window I looked directly at a church, and if you looked at the street level there were prostitute booths all around it, along with the prostitute registration office! That was certainly a memorable part of my trip.

Ehh...."the" church? You do realise that there are loads and loads of churches in the Netherlands.

Really? I didn't realize that being a part of Europe, with all the religious wars having ravaged the continent for millenia, that your low spot would have churches!

It was unique because the church was in the middle of the red light district, and the contrast of prostitution and religion was delicious.

And it was sorta famous, in my guidebook and all, can't remember the name right now though.

And the hotel itself is efficiency, what do you want, luxury? Or do they not allow rats into hostels?
