Today I read about Two Worlds, a CRPG that "combines the extremely dynamic and sophisticated combat system best known from the top selling “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” with the meaning and freedom of the acclaimed “Fallout“ series". The list of features includes "a freedom of choice unseen in other Role Playing Games", "non-linear storyline", "unique magic system" and just about anything a good fantasy RPG should have.

Now, at first glance this game is everything I dream of. It boasts all the features I want in a CRPG, it has breathtaking visuals and it's PC-only. Normally I'd be ecstatic over an announcement such as this one, but all this crap about "dynamic and sophisticated combat system best known from top selling Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" concerns me, particularly because KotOR combat is neither dynamic nor sophisticated, only crappy.

The press release also contains outright lies such as this one: "For the first time in the history of the genre, the Player is allowed to assemble their own magic spells." This is something anyone who ever played, for instance, Daggerfall can easily disprove.

So what do you people think? Am I a fool for getting my hopes up? Is Two Worlds yet another mediocre vaporware by anonymous developers who want to draw some glances by namedropping Fallout and BioWare games, or a potential CRPG masterpiece?

More info here.

complexity of the game will be achieved mainly through a variety of meaningful choices

"This way!"
"No, that way!"

Bah, another set of hype whores.

If KoTOR's combat was sophisticated for these people, then their development planning must be even more DEE! DEE! DEE! than SeanyD's.

At least they don't have faggy concept art, Rosh. And didn't beg various people to write their story for them. And they actually have a game.

You have to admit that it's a pretty game, though... at least judging by the screenshots. Hopefully it's not just another vapid blonde that's a decent ride, but doesn't have enough actual "content" to keep you coming back for more.

What worries me most of all is the name of their development house. ZUXXEZ=SUXXORZ OMGroflburgers!

I'm wondering whether ZUXXEZ is supposed to mean "Success" or "Sucks ass"...

Pretty stupid name anyway.

Hahah, true, true.

Also, IIRC, this Polish-Australian TV show in which weird magician people had these electric armours in which they shooted people with energy balls.

[insert homosexual implication here]

Also, you said "shooted" and I wanted to point out that that sounds funny.

Funny, the enviroments in the screenshots remind me of a childhood holiday destination around Yorkshire. I am suddenly tempted to buy it. Eitherway it may not be revolutionary, but if it doesn't suck i'll deffinitely buy it, as these types of games are far and few between.

Dude, it's past 2 AM, third day of celebrating Christmas in Poland. The palinka is getting to my coherence and typing skills.

Was that the one with the peasant chick who the guy kept saying was from Iceland? Because Iceland was cold?

Ehehe, I remember that. Weird, but fun shit, that.

As for that Two Worlds bit: I'm not looking forward to it, at all.

Well, technically it would be a first in the MMORPG genre; Daggerfall is not an MMORPG.

The world literally comes to life as it immediately reacts to the player’s actions and changes accordingly -offering new and exciting challenges.

Strong, non-linear storyline.

I'd really like to see how they pull that off. To me, for those to be done right is a theoretical impossibility with an MMO, mainly due to balancing and effort issues.

I wouldn't get your hopes up Ratty. Behind all that PR speech is probably the same shit they've been feeding us since Everquest. Nonetheless, I will keep an eye on it as it develops. TW and Conan seem to be the only MMOs on the horizon that could offer something different and perhaps fun for a change.

It says it can handle up to 8 players...that makes me skeptical.

However considering they specifically mentioned "non-linearity" which most people dont even know the definition of...I'll eagerly await more news.

It says its release is in Febuary 2006...shouldnt be long for more info or even someone here to buy it and review.

Sincerely,

Two Worlds isn't an MMORPG.

You're absolutely right. I don't know why I thought that. Maybe it's because I made that post right before I went to sleep or the fact that some developer out there is actually making a big single player RPG for a change; probably a mix of both. Sorry about that.

Yes, a lie indeed. Or maybe, by technicality, they're considering Daggerfall and Morrowind as part of the "action" RPG genre.

In light of all that, my opinion changes completely. Aside from the suspicious combat system, it looks like it'd be great. However, all of Reality Pump's games in the past have been mediocre at best, lets hope that doesn't indicate another one.
