THE BEEEEEHNBLEEEEEEEHDE!

Mm, delicious Baneblade. Imperial Guard had some nice stuff once GW pulled their fingers out and properly developed them.

I've heard things about the 40k series but I've never actually read any of the books/played any of the games. The setting sounds interesting, but if I were to get into it where would I even start? Is it like Vampire: The Masquerade where I can play the game without needing to understand the source material or am I going to have to do a loooot of reading to understand the games whatsoever?
It's not that simple. 40k isn't a series, it's a setting. There a lots of things in that setting.

The "main" 40k thing is the tabletop models. To get into them, read the 40k rulebook, choose a faction and read their codex. That pretty much sets you up for all things 40k related. From there you would start buying/painting/playing the tabletops.

I've heard the Dawn of War games are quite good.

I only played DoW 1, but I liked it very much. Good RTS/tactics game.

It's superb... Do get the expansion packs; [Winter Assault, and Dark Crusade; likely Soul Sisters, but I've not played that one yet].

I have one 40k book; and sadly have never played the game (having no pieces), but always interested in them.

*Lately I've wondered about just printing some pieces.

Comrades! We must stand strong against the Chaos threat who dare threaten the motherland.
For Valhalla and the Emperor!

Remember seeing them in White Dwarf issues occasionally, weren't they the deep yellow with a black fist on the pauldron?
No, those are the Imperial Fists (Who are also the best chapter).

I must admist I made a mistake, the guys I was referring to weren't the Iron Fists. They were the Iron Hands. They're all black Space Marines that are obsessed with making themselves into machines. Their motto is literally "The flesh is weak".

Ah yes, them. Been a while since I was last seriously into this stuff, the brain is weak lol

Also, I think my favourite chapter might still be the Howling Griffons, simply because I like their colours, but also because they're a fan-made chapter who were effectively canonised (I remember the WD issue where they originally appeared, an entire chapter painted by one guy in this new colour scheme, pretty awesome).
