Are the any sequels that are better than the original game?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I had this thought while reading the current F3 posts.
Possibly Civilisation......... maybe but X-Com went down hill as did elder scrolls, Master of orion, gothic, stronghold. while the sequels where (generally) technically superior they so often lacked what made the original great.
I am drawing a blank on any franchise that gets better as it goes along.

I can think of a few. I'm trying to stay away from controversial series with this list, such as Monkey Island or Half-Life. Also, some of these series peak before going downhill, but they do produce a sequel clearly better than the original game. Anyway, off the top of my head, and far from comprehensive.
  • Baldur's Gate
  • Diablo
  • Freespace
  • King's Quest
  • Myst
  • Neverwinter Nights
  • No One Lives Forever
  • SimCity
  • Space Quest
  • System Shock
  • Ultima
  • Warcraft

I fixed your list. More games that could be added to that list are Leisure Suit Larry, Quest For Glory, Legend Of Kyrandia and Thief. Just to name a few.

Though in almost all of the above examples, the quality was eventually eroded by inferior, if not outright crappy, sequels.

i might be flamed for this but i've always thought Fallout 2 was better than Fallout 1.

:/
Well, there's quite a number of people that consider Fallout 2 better than Fallout 1. However, I guess it's more of a personal preference, since each game has something better than the other one. While Fallout 2 has improved gameplay and a larger world, Fallout 1 has better atmosphere and generally feels more complete.

What about System Shock?

Warcraft 2 was better than Warcraft.
Red Alert was probably better than Command & Conquer.

Day of the Tentacle was way better than Maniac Mansion. The streetfighter series had a few ups and downs. The Pro Evolution Soccer series keeps getting better. There are plenty of examples.

Come to think of it, the whole "sequel is better than the original" often seems to hold true to the old console games. Sonic 2 > Sonic 1. Streets of Rage 2 > 1. Earl and Toejam 2 > 1 (debateable). Street Fighter 2 > 1. Mortal Kombat 2 > 1.

Sequels better than the original:

1. Freespace 2
2. IWAR 2
3. Baldurs Gate 2
4. Thief 2
5. Jedi Knight 2
6. Rome : Total War (Not sure if it counts as sequel to MTW)
7. Fallout 2 (has more to do with the fact i played it first prob)
8. Heroes 3
9. Warcraft 3
10. Worms 2

:D thank you

P.S. Generally i like to think that PC games are not like movies in that sequels do get better (allthough thats not to say there arent horrible exceptions: deusex2, heroes4 for example) - problem ussually is they try to do spin offs or just cut the series :(

Simcity 4 is the best sequel in its series. Region play offers better re playability.

I actually have a copy of SC4 and you're right, it rocks. It's just really buggy (crashes allot and transportation systems don't work right).

Resident Evil 4

lies!

Aye! What the heck, more items and acts and whatnot dont make a game "better". Pff. About NOLF, Cate has smaller boobs in the second one, i know, i checked. 1 > 2.

Anyway, aside from the obvious System Shock 2, who totally stomped it's predecessor, i can think of these ones:

Unreal Tournament (without any "200x edition" bs, i mean the one and only)
Demise (dungeon crawling sequel to a dungeon crawling sequel of a dungeon crawler named Mordor)
GTA: San Andreas (i cant believe no-one mentioned it :o)
Football Manager 2007 <3 :*
Magic Carpet 2
Mortal Kombat 2 (tho i'm not standing here so strong)
Descent 2

Oh, and also:

Opinions be opinions, and i'm not taking any value from the third installment of HoMM, i recognize it to be damn good. But, ah.. i dunno, it never was quite as fun for me as the second one + PoL. :/ Matter of personal preference.

Maybe it's the drawn, "oldsk00l" graphics that sealed the big FTW, for me, on the second HoMM. Maybe coz Sprites are sexy bishes. ;k

Whatever, soz for the slight derail, carry on.

Much respect for your opinion love them both

Both Homm2 and 3 were exceptional and 3 improoved on 2 only by making sure the game made the jump into better graphics (and one of the best random map generators ever :) ).

Worms is way better than Worms 2.

Some think System Shock is better than System Shock 2. Some aspects were diminished in the sequel and the char system could have done with some rebalancing, but I think the shiny (as it were) makes up for it.

I'm going to assume that Caesar III is better than Caesar II and Caesar.

I agree that once you have Civ III there's not much reason to play Civ or Civ II - possibly Civ for the minimalism and nostalgia.

Warlords 2 was a lot better than Warlords, even though the graphics and gameplay changed little.

Monkey Island 2 has a slight edge on the first game.

Icewind Dale II is perhaps slightly better than Icewind Dale (minus the expansions anyway), though I suppose to many that's like the difference between a kick in the balls and a kick in the balls with the 3rd edition ruleset.
