Assassination

All those murdering maniacs who plan killing people on internet forums... Just kidding, but I would like to see the pope go.

The pope? What he'd ever do to you? ;)
He was in the hitlerjugend by the way. But then again, I believe every German child born in that era was.

I suggest prisons find more ways to generate incomefrom the prisoners themselves.

Well the point of prisons is to generate income by turning the criminals into productive members of society. Though it appears everyone but Sweden seems to have forgotten this.

How does Sweden work it?

By being nice to convicts, it's almost surreal how well it works.

Just a question, because i still don't get it.
How is swedens being nice to convicts different for example from germanys being nice to convicts?
You know, like sending criminal youth on holidays in some other countries with social workers and such?

I really don't know much about swedens system so it would be really nice if you could go a bit more into detail (even through pm or such).

Germany isnt beeing "nice" to convicts. We have jails with a minimum in securty which arent really a pleasure either and we have those that you dont want to visit really.

Just cause the criminals dont get tortured here or the like means all of them enjoy some kind of life in luxury.

In swiss prison you get single cells with an own television and even internet, there are HUGE libraries, excellent food and everything looks clean etc.

then why dont you request to get in a swiss prison if its like a hotel ?

You know, you can have all the luxury in the world if youre traped, youre traped. You simply cant go out when ever YOU want. And that can be quite a punishment. Does it mean our prisons are like some concentration camp ? No of course not. We do threat our criminals like humans. But still no one of us with a sane mind would really enjoy to get to a prison. As great as it might look from the "outside".

Also I am almost sure that even in swiss not EVERY prison is designed in the way with TV, internet and libaries. Very violant and agressive criminals usualy dont get those.

@Crni Vuk
I never said they had luxury or anything like that - but 'being nice' is a broad term. And therefore i asked where the difference lies between germanies 'being nice to convicts' and swedens 'being nice to convicts'.
Because as much as i could get from documentations about different german prisons, they all looked quite a bit nicer than for example american ones (which also only know from documentations).

-edit-
So it's not mainly about prison. Also there are prisons in sweden, so still there's the question how's being in a swedish prison different from being in a german prison?

Just for information i'm from germany, and i know a bit about what punishments are there for criminals in germany, and often they seem to be laughable with lots of suspended sentecnes.

I don't Crni Vuk, but as a matter of fact i know some "small-time criminals", such as a weed-dealer who answer my questions whether they are afraid from the authorities with the answer that they don't care - "it's like a hotel anyway."

And i have to admit that i know german prisons only from the series "Hinter Gittern: der Frauenknast". And i don't think it depicts the actual truth, hehe.

So basically i agree with Alphadrop.

though I think we have to make a difference between 6 months in jail and letz say 16 years.

I will agree that in general the situatoin for smaller criminals is rather slack.

But remembering the way how the RAF groups have been treated ... Germany can be hard to its criminals/terrorists too. It was another time back then for sure. But they have shown in TV enough prisons here you definetly "miss" the luxury like TVs, and Internet. People been happy to have some radio. But it was not a simple prison but maximum-security prison

Would be nice to know in detail how the swedish prisons are beeing "nice" :P

But again I dont count TVs and such as beeing nice. And threating criminals like humans neither as that should be seen as standart not beeing nice. But thats me. I mean if you are a violant and agressive criminal they have in every prison ways how to deal with that. And I doubt a single cell with nothing inside is that great

But yeah, I understand what you mean.

There was a program I watched a couple of years back about prisons in other countries and it showed a high security prison with extensive psychiatric and mental health wards, a proper school and library and also a farm all protected by a rather thin wire fence.
While the living standards may not be amazing they are usually better than what a lot of criminals live in and the chance to do productive work such as growing your own food is a very effective way of rehabilitating someone.
Either Sweden or Switzerland, always get the low countries mixed up. :V

At one point a couple of British politicians thought this way but it would have cost to much money so instead we have a bloated, creaky prison system that is basically a holding pen for crims.

reminds me to this french movie Papillon (film) with Dustin Hoffman And Steve McQeen.

There's a movie of this? Gotta watch it. I only know the book, which is fantastic.

If you like Papillon, i can also recommend the movie Midnight Express

know about it and liked it. Also yeah Papillon is good as movie. Never have read the book though.

There are quite a few pretty good prison movies actually. Escape from Alcatraz, Runaway Train (one of my favourites) and of course the rather new Shawshawk Redemption or Green Mile. Both as well quite good movies.
