I'll start with: Robert E. Howard
An avid writer who's created a multitude of characters, Howard is most well known from character's such as Conan the Barbarian or Solomon Kane. Writing in magazines such as Weird Tales Howard made his living on the typewriter before he blew his brains out in 1936. I admire the pacing of his writing with nary a paragraph left to dally because nearly all of them furthered the plot. While some stories can be formulaic Howard truly made you fell every throw of a punch, swing of an axe, and clash of foes on the paper. He wrote stories to enthrall and entertain the reader, and sometimes that's all you really need.
Highlights:
Solomon Kane - Red Shadows considered by many to be the definitive Solomon Kane story.
Conan - The Tower of the Elephant is a fun romp that is quintessentially Conan.
