AvP (spoilers)

I came out of the movie dissappointed but it was expected. Honestly I would have preferred the movie to take place in the same timeline as the PC games or the arcade games.

For the PC game, they could have just done the movie around scenes where the games couldn't or wouldn't show.

The arcade game idea would have been good, just either use different characters and more of them that were badass.I don't know if any of you guys either played it or could even remember it but it was action packed. Who could forgot the predator picking up an alienb with one hand and punching its face in repeatedly. Not only that they actually made use of their shoulder cannons and often you could pick up an item that allowed you to fire the gun without it overheating.

Seems like the video game and movie industries are running in parallel tracks.

In catering to the "numbers" and watering down their products in order to garner the biggest sales, they're inevitably pushing away the audience that made those products sucessful to begin with.

It's a sad, sad time.

Its only going to continue until the masses one day get tired of the crap shovelled in their face and demand more substance.

Look no further than movies such as Dawn Of The Dead. I mean they had Scooby Doo boy do the script (what a joke).

Sadly name whoring and sub-par products go hand in hand nowadays.

Haha, yeah, except for the part where the Dawn of the Dead remake was excellent, and just as much relevence to our current times as the original did to the time when it was made.

Well I agree that dumbass one liners, cheetah zombies, sex for the kiddies, ridiculous celebrity shooting, zero character development, and one very annoying father to a zombie baby (yes another horrid idea), sadly entertains our society.

Hey, maybe in the future we will come up with cyber zombies too. I mean its the sign of the times man, 21st century shit.

The Dawn of the Dead re-envisioning was a fun, popcorn zombie movie with a slight social subtext.

Watch the movie again, and look at how it makes quite a few subtle points about our culture. Reality TV is constantly referenced, in one of the first scenes of the movie the main character comes home to find her husband watching a Reality TV show, and finds out that her favorite character has been eliminated. There's the zombie-celebrity killing fest that you mentioned, the ending sequence filmed through a handheld camera, even the concept of the movie is reality TV themed. Start off with a bunch of "contestants" in a mall and kill them off one by one...

It's a good social commentary for 2004, just as the original was for 1978.

Well I guess it comes down to preference. Personally I find it even scarier that the movie was interesting because it was based on the same shallowness it comments about.

Edit: I guess I should also explain why I had good reason to not expect something good from AVP.

1. It has been said before but the first two preds were killed off too early. Now I know they were novices but still I would have preferred a death that was atleast honorable instead of dying like a bunch of losers. Remember even a novice predator (whos society atleast focuses on the hunt and combat) should not have fallen to such basic tactics used by an opponent whom their race has fought countless times before.

2. Amazing lack of character developement. Maybe thats because the humans all comprise of some scientists whos primary abilities were to run around like scared girls and spout some pretty dumb one liners (sacrificial chamber anyone). None of them could relate to me and hence the only person I remember was Weyland.

3. Fighting is extremely lacking. Anyone who has played the PC or arcade games could clearly see the type of action that should have been present.

4. One of the most important and primary weapons of the predators was their shoulder mounted cannons. In fact if they had these weapons (instead of some horribly contrived idea of the humans stealing them), there would have been much more action (somewhat like the arcade game where if you had multiple preds and had obtained the heat nullifiers, you could go on a shooting spree. Imagine aliens getting blown up left and right.

5. Ties in to number four. So not only is it ridiculous to rob the predators of their signature weapon (I guess so Anderson could easily kill off some early), the girl "gives it back" as a sign of friendship (very stupid sympathy ploy). Even worse, the predator actually falls for it. Ok, thats akin to some idiot stealing the smartguns that belong to Vasquez and Drake. This in turn causes the unit to lose some major firepower and most likely will cause casualties. Now the idiot returns the guns to the marines and everything is hunky dory? No the marines would have probably shot the guy on sight if not giving them a fate worse than death (Paul Reisers death were it not for aliens anyone).

6. The predators also have the disc of death. Anyone that has watched the movies or played the games would realise it has some serious slicing and dicing powers. The predator could have easily used it to sever a bunch of alien heads instantly. Also the disc is linked to the predators targeting system making pinpoint strikes easy.

Oohh goody...looks like Mr. Anderson didn't fuck up as bad as we though:

With no press screenings before any interviews, no-one has really had a chance to query the filmmakers on what went wrong with the quickly divisive "Alien vs. Predator". Questions have swirled about the PG-13 rating, the truncated runtime, the questionable elements that seem to ignore the previous film lore (eg. the sped up alien breeding cycle).

n a special Q&A industry screening, Paul W.S. Anderson was there to take questions from the audience about the film after it was shown and Bloody Disgusting was on hand to file a report. Here's a look at the most important questions:

"About the studio's cutting of the film, which he had no control over, he said, and I quote, "All of the best scenes were cut." Anderson was obviously very annoyed at the way the film was released. However, this was not purely because of the PG-13 limitation, which incidentally, the studio enforced THREE WEEKS before the release date! It was always going to be R until then.

Part of the reason for the cutting was that some of the effects were not ready by the time the release date came around. The effects team had very little time to do anything.

As far as the content that was cut, apparently we see all those who die, die on screen, but he also said that there is a sub-plot that we will have to wait for on DVD. Yes there will be an R-rated Director's cut DVD although they don't know the release date yet."

For the full interview which goes into detail about scenes cut, the ignored Pete Briggs script, etc. then click here.

I'd definitely take the time to read the transcripts on Bloody Disgusting. They go into detail with Paul Anderson about lots of things that were wrong with the movie, and apparently, most of the blame goes to the studio. Things like the hugely increased growth cycle of the alien, etc, were discussed.

Also, seems ANderson himself is EXTREMELY pissed at the way the studio cut the film. I mean, for chrissake, cutting an R film to PG-13 3 weeks before release?? Stupid.

ok so i get the idea knowone likes this movie but what is really funny is that all of you are bad mouthing it saying i can make a better movie and blah blah blah well how about this, is anyone can actually make a better movie of avp ill give them a check that covers all the expenses and an extra few million for a good job, the catch is you have to make the movie without my help, so there is your challenge people with mouthes bigger then the sun and ego's that need an extra seat on the bus, my email is ieeioo@pcconnect.co.nz, if your up for the challenge then email me!
and put your whateva were your mouth is(even though you would need something a whole lot bigger to cover it up)

Prove you are financially secure enough to give us the money if we succeed, perhaps then your statement will mean something.

Besides the fact that no one can make another Alien Verse Predator movie without aquiring the copyright beforehand. That makes it difficult to create a movie.

Do you believe that only artists should be allowed to appreciate art? Only architects allowed to appreciate buildings? Strange, considering that people have to pay money to see this movie, I would think that they would be allowed to hold an opinion on it.

I thought the film was ok, not great but ok.

And talking about Dawn of the Dead, go see Shawn of The Dead!! It's hilarious!

Im glad I read these spoilers...Im not gonna see it now.

Thats so shitty that not only the made it PG-13 which kills all the drama we want to see, but how could they expect it done in only three weeks? Whats this? The Predator's had NO SHOULDER CANNONS!!!!???!!!!

If you listen you can hear the Predator from the first movie rolling in its grave...

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

BTW: Not sure they found all of the pieces from the last Predator though.

Sincerely,
Snax
