I agree about the combat and the class system being expanded, but I actually really liked exploring in BG. I forget who drew this comparison (CGW?), but they said that BG makes you explore for quests, and BGII offers you the chance to explore during quests. Really the only exploration areas in BGII were the forests at the end, and they did not add much content to the game.Well, the battles are less repetative, the general class system is expanded and better implemented. I personally found BG1 a bit too slow and boring for my taste - it neither had the engaging story of PS:T or the fun battles of BG2, and too much wandering around (hate that, one of the reasons I don't like FO3). Music-wise, I'd say the two are about even.
The BG combat system also severely disadvantaged mages throughout the game, especially at the beginning. However, I find it a breath a relief to play BG after BGII just because whenever I create a character in BGII, I try to find a powerful build and powerplay, in BG, I tend to roleplay a lot more.
