Best villains in gaming

I give props to Darth Malak as well for a somewhat deeper-than-needed to be Sith Lord.
I would argue the same of Darth Traya, Darth Nihlis (And Darth Sion to a degree) from the Second KOTOR game.

Was Kane REALLY a villain though?

He was proven objectively right in the end, and saved the world from Tiberium.
Look, If you're referencing the plot of C&C 4 I don't even consider that a true C&C game and I don't bother with it. When I say he was a villain I sort of mean from westwoods perspective (and even then he wasn't EXACTLY a villain but more of a very very bad anti hero, he was originally supposed to be Cain the son of Adam who killed his own brother and took refuge into the land of Nod (sound familiar?)).

I should have mentioned Revolver Ocelot.

latest

Well at least his MGS1, MGS2 and 3 incarnations. I'm not too keen on him in MGS4 and PP, or his 'Liquid' moments in MGS2 either.

I think he was the Biblical Cain. It's just he still fought aliens.

Kain from the legacy of Kain is a brillant antagonist. I'd go for him as the best villain in gaming.
I also love the Wau from SOMA, Irenicus from Baldur's gate and the master from Fallout... But the most intimidating one is probably the shadow from Amnesia. Doesn't even has a physical form, it's just... reality itself shattering to get rid of you.

Kain is not a villain. The only game he's even the antagonist in is the original Soul Reaver.

Yes and no. Fate itself is the villain of Legacy of Kain, because it forced Kain to be an ultimate villain. Which makes him interesting and deep. How responsible is he, when you know that his fate of absolute evil was written centuries before he was even born ? Is he a hero for wanting to revert the power of fate, or is he just a megalomaniac devil who wants to punch God in the face ?

At the end of Defiance, he does punch God in the face. I wouldn't consider him a devil for that. I've always considered Kain to be a man who saw what pride can cost and ultimately decided to try and clean up his mess. Whether or not he is successful still remains to seen because the series is unfinished.

Yeah, but his quest of fixing the consequences of his pride is also led by... another pride. The pride of becoming the absolute master, able to decide his own fate. The master he was promised to become, when he exterminated the humans and ruled over the ashes of the world.
Yes, Kain is definitely one of the most complex and fascinating villain/hero I've ever had the chance to play/fight. Truly a mythological character, full of despair, resolve and pride, and I would give a lot to see the conclusion of his story.

If there is one franchise that deserves a remake and/or a sequel, Legacy of Kain is the first one that comes to mind. And it's paradoxally one of the most cursed franchises ever. Every single title has been cancelled, or had to face unimaginable trials to be released. Hell, even Nosgoth was basically what was left of "Dead Sun", and even these ashes got cancelled a few months ago. Such a shame.

I was always under the impression by Defiance that Kain was far more interested in defying fate and undoing the damage that he and the elder God had caused rather than ruling the world again. I could be wrong, I haven't played the game since it was new. What happened with Dead Sun and The Dark Prophecy is honestly tragic. Square unfortunately has zero interest in the franchise at this point .

The master in fallout 1 and the antagonist of shadowrun dragonfall (I both don't recall the name and don't want to spoil the plot)

Both are idealists that goes great lenghts to convince you or others that their plans are the best for humanity and those plans make sense. And their backstory is cool.
