Bioshock 2 gimps PC multiplayer

Nobody I know is buying Bioshock 2 for the multiplayer.

They're still kind of confused as to the type of person who would play Bioshock 2's multiplayer.

The point isn't the overall quality of multiplayer, the point, IMO, is that Infinity Ward seems to have set a troubling precedent. Who's to say now, that most developers will simply follow this road, and PC gaming will take another big step toward "consolification."
 
Meh, half-assed multiplater tacked onto a quality single player package is fine by me, especially since <s>Irrational games</s> 2k is a house specialized in AAA SP titles, and hasn't done a single MP game yet.

CODMW2 on the other hand, is not. So bitching is allowed.

And also, I'm not worried. All trends are such stupid ideas that they change every 6 months. Or in gaming, every second 1Q.

The entire world is going insane. No dedicated servers on PC games, Australia bans females from having orgasms, the stacked layers of DRM that has been proven time and time again to be ineffective.

This is a disturbing trend, IMO. First MW2, then this. Companies are going to milk PC gamers for DLC, and there isn't much we can do.

euhm, Bioshock 1 didn't have multiplayer. why would you be ranting about Bioshock 2 not having dedicated servers and LAN play?

Bah.... Bioshock 1 sucked as a shooter, at least for me, i had that feeling that i was playing a console FPS all the time, seriously enemy health bar??? you have to empty a tommy gun clip just to kill one/two guys, thats bullshit.

About the multiplayer thingie, then thats another dead game for us (brazilians), since here, no one has a decent home internet we have to depend on dedicated servers to play :(.

I wont bother with Bioshock 2, but i hope they dont make all new games with this "no dedicated servers" crap.
 
It's not like Bioshock 2 multiplayer is such a big deal anyway. I think the real reason they are not going to support it is because it's tacked on and they know it will be crap.

Bioshock 2 doesn't look that exciting anyway. Turning it into a series was never that great of an idea.

Why are you guys being so tiringly obtuse? rcorporon is talking about the trend of not taking PC multiplayer seriously, and that being disturbing, and all you heap on him is "lulz who wants to play BioShock 2 multiplayer anyway" and "BioShock didn't have multiplayer"? The fuck? Did I accidentally log into IGN or summat.

Actually, no one wins, the console and PC version will be the same, so the only losing side is for PC players that getting a dump down multiplayer (while console players are already aquanted with crappy multiplayer :twisted:)

But it isn't really a trend. Crappy tacked on MP modes have rarely received much support and Bioshock 2 mp will be just that. MW2 is so far the only game with a serious mp component that did this, that I know of. Bioshock 2 doing this isn't that surprising.

StarCraft 2 not supporting online play through anything but b.net (ie removing TCP/IP and LAN play). I'm sure that with some digging that you can find a number of them that don't offer such options, though I'm not sure that there are enough to point to a trend. Still, three recent high-profile release games are limiting multiplayer options so it's worth taking note of.
 
Call of Duty grew up on PC, and the Modern Warfare multiplayer PC scene was quite large, if I remember correctly.

The main thrust of my argument here was that, as BN pointed out, this seems to be a growing trend now. We have two games going the "console" route, and once other companies catch on to the DLC on PC craze, I worry that the days of the old style PC multiplayer (ie: dedicated servers, console commands, etc) will die off in favour of console style peer-to-peer multiplayer gaming.

I really don't give two shits about Bioshock's multiplayer, as I don't like Bioshock.
 
Great post!!! I didn't play the first game, but I'll probably support DICE with a puchase, just to encourage others to keep PC gaming apart from consoles.
 
It's funny. A year or two ago I would have said that EA was one of the worst offenders to decent Pc gaming. Now they are among the few "big" publishers that sells decent and "new" games (among the usual reruns) and has a reasionable attitute when it comes to drm and 3rd party programs. Who would have guessed?
