Bioshock... The Movie

Maphusio

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Holly Hanna, so upon browsing the tech news at work I stumbled across this little gem.

SAN FRANCISCO - Take-Two Interactive Software said Friday that "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski will make a movie version of "BioShock", its hit video game about an underwater utopia gone disastrously wrong.

That sells it for me. I suppose Verbinski could make a bad movie after Pirates but, I'll keep my hopes up!

Take-Two did not disclose financial terms of the deal or other details, such as when the film would be released. The company is the target of a $2 billion takeover bid by rival game publisher Electronic Arts.

After reading this, I really doubt that Bioshock's weak story could be expanded enough to make it an entertaining movie.

It'd be interesting if the movie was a prequel though.

Harvesting of children, especially girls, I think not. Medical experimentation on children, think not.

This movie already smells like the Doom movie. Blatant ripoff minus all the elements of the original games.

I'm down. Bioshock is one of the most interesting and intense games I've ever played. The movie could be terrific, if the tone and setting are translated well. I love the art deco look and the Lovecraftian feel of it all.

I'm actually pretty excited about this. This is no Uwe Boll we're talking about.

Meh, its the current habit, make a movie of any game that sells decently.
Never mind that the actual plot in the said movie is a mess and barely resembles that of the game at all.

Behold, Minesweeper: the Movie

the Lovecraftian feel

What?

It obviously owes a lot more to Rand and Orwell, but the look of the whole thing reminded me a lot of Lovecraft (especially the darker corridors and moments when you know something is about to come up behind you). Especially the beginning sequence when you're in the water. I felt like if I didn't jump on that goddamn island something huge and tentacle-y was going to eat me.

you could easily make a good movie out of Bioshock.

you'll note that many great movies worked from a pretty simple premise.

I dunno, man. The only thing, in my opinion, that links it with Lovecraft is the fact that it's underwater. That's about it. It lacks the whole "massive ancient gods from outer space" thing, as well as hulking tentacled monstrosities.

Anyway, I was just curious.

Obviously, but the Cthulhu mythos isn't the only thing that Lovecraft wrote about. I was speaking more about tone and vibe than plot and characters, anyway. Not important enough to debate about, but the game certainly came off as having Lovecraftian influences to me.

Well, there is still the fact that there hasn't been a single good movie based on a videogame in... ever.

Who knows, maybe the upcoming Bioshock, Halo, and Max Payne movies will break that barrier.

(I'm guessing if one does, it won't be Halo).

considering that extremely little 'game' movies were actually made seriously rather than halfassed, that's no real surprise, now is it.

half those failures probably come from Uwe Boll to begin with, so it doesn't seem too fair to blame it on their game origin. ;)

Agree, it's not about making it based on a game, but the incompetence of the film staff (pathetic actors and cheesy dialogues + usualy crappy effects).

Wasn't Final Fantasy film decent BTW? It wasn't all bad from what I recall.

Sin City was as close to a Max Payne movie as you'd get.

A prequel would be nice but not interesting enough for the general public I suppose...So, yeah, it's probably gonna suck.

Also, don't hold your breath too much on this one. There have been dozens of movies based on videogames which have been announced but never were done in the end : Max Payne, Interstate, Duke Nukem...Thanks God !

As regards the Lovecraftian feel : it may be because of the late 30's/40's design mixed with the general feeling of insanity reigning over Rapture and maybe also because of the end which reveals the true nature of the main character which is also to be found in several of Lovecraft's short stories.
