Bioshock... The Movie

Malky said:
I'm down. Bioshock is one of the most interesting and intense games I've ever played. The movie could be terrific, if the tone and setting are translated well. I love the art deco look and the Lovecraftian feel of it all.

BioShock is a mediocre shooter in a great setting with a lame, predictable story, raping the ear out of one of humanity's dumbest philosophical streams in Objectivism, and actually exploring its own thematic finger-deep, probably afraid to scare off the less intelligent amongst us.

Material for a film? I guess so. The setting and feel are good enough, for sure. But the game is so confused about whether it wants to be a shock-zombie game, a detective game or a really easy shooter, I wouldn't know where to start as a director.

Anyway, Tetris the Movie is better

Ha ha, that is pretty good.
There was another Tetris: the Movie but this one is better.

It's just a video game, dude.

Well, there is still the fact that there hasn't been a single good movie based on a videogame in... ever.

False. Mortal Kombat was awesome.

Jeesh, was there a discount on predictable lame counterpoints at Wal-Mart or something?

It is a mediocre video game pretending to be something it's not.

You can't blame me for the game trying and failing to be something more than a mediocre shooter, yet ending up as just that.

I second that, that movie blew me away. Right now it's cheesy but back when I was right around 15 it was awesome.

How was his post any more creative, informative, thought provoking or well written than yours? Calling someone out on spamming just creates more spam. The moderators don't need your help.

I don't disagree with this, and it's going to be really interesting to see how the film turns out. I hope Paul W Anderson steers clear of it. I don't need another shitty Resident Evil movie under water. I'd love for it to have a Dark City kind of tone.

I'm still waiting for Tim Burton to realise that he needs to make a movie version of Grim Fandango. Until that happens there won't be a good game to movie adaption, I believe.

I'll still be watching this when it comes out, though, since I liked the game. I do think it will take quite a bit of talent to make a good movie of it (instead of just a passable movie), and I'm not sure this Verbinski guy has got what it takes.

Also, I guess I can kind of see the Lovecraft feel in the game, but I'd much rather wait for Del Toro's At The Mountains of Madness, than hoping for this movie to have any kind of Lovecraftian feel.

thank you

anyways, even though i'll probably like it, some people might not. a fun part of the game was making good or bad decisions and a movie, being one track, has no such ability (yet).

Don't count on that happening any time in the next five years.

avp2 and resident evil werent too bad

and that lara croft movie was popcorn cinema, iirc... typical "watch and forget" cinema

all a bit above "mediocre", so id say there are decent adaptations.

I'll be happy if it happens at all, but I think there's a decent chance that it will, eventually. You're probably right that it's gonna be a long wait, though, but I can live with that.

i really don't like the idea of movies based on video games, especially shooter games. in terms of shooter games, Bioshock was one of the most shallow, especially considering that it's a successor to System Shock, but with its head crammed so far up its own ass that people go so far as to call it a masterpiece of modern art. System Shock 2 was one of my favorite games, and Bioshock felt like a half-assed knock off, even down to the same essential plot twist. i still can't get over the fact that it was literally impossible to lose in Bioshock, making it feel like an amusement park ride instead of a video game. when there's close to no danger present in a video game, how are you going to get a reaction of fear from the players?

here's some more news on the movie though - http://kotaku.com/5013666/zelnick-expect-bioshock-film-alongside-bioshock-3

apparently Verbinski's waiting until the third Bioshock game to release the movie. the fact that the games are going to create a trilogy comes as a surprise to me, and not a very pleasant one. one could be hopeful that they'll learn from their mistakes, but judging by the massively successful critical and financial reception, they probably figure that they didn't make any mistakes.

Today's society still consider video game a toy for youngster, so I'm not surprise 'movie-based-on-video-game' is not treated seriously as a serious business.

Plus games and movies are 2 different type of entertainment. Full interactive of the former one is the strong key while the later one focus on story and art form.

AVP2 is one of the most grueling and horrendous experiences I've ever had in a movie theater. It was so poorly constructed and shot that I couldn't follow it or see what was going on 99% of the time. That movie might as well have been called "Aliens vs Predator 2: We Forgot to Hire a Lighting Technician."

The ending is also one of the worst in film history.
