Yup, blues.

I need recommendations on blues. And I mean really dark, depressing, woman-left-me-police-shot-my-dog delta blues. Something like Black Snake Moan from the movie of the same name. The darker the better.

Leadbelly, Pink Anderson, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and (my alltime favourite) Mississippi John Hurt.

I don't believe its very depressing but... Isn't Avery Brooks a big blues musician? Or was that more Jazz...?

Hah, forget one: Blind Lemon Jefferson. He's cool too.

Also: Mississippi John Hurt is more folk than blues most of the time, but it's still great stuff, often about booze and women, but also about (I hate to say it) religion. Yeah.

These are all awesome, Alec, thanks a bunch. The girl they're for will surely like it.

However, for me, I'm looking for something more... contemporary... perhaps something with... electric guitars.

Oh, and darker. :newevil:

The Coen Wolters band is a pretty good band, which describes itself as a Blues Trio so it might be to your liking. Lots of electric guitar, but not really dark. Still pretty good.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion? I don't think they fit what you're looking for exactly, but worth a listen.

John Spencer Blues Explosion

Alvin Youngblood Hart

Buddy Guy

But for a real dark dark place Leonard Cohen's album The Future. Sample lyrics: "Give me crack and anal sex / take the only tree that's left / and stuff it up the hole in your culture"

Enjoy

Things on top of my head with blues... they might not be 'dark or sad' but just a couple that i know.

Albert King, Albert Collins, BB King, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers (with Clapton), Buddy Guy, SRV, Robert Johnson.

If you'd like Trumpet/Sax based blues... can't help ya there, am a geetar player.

Just don't mention any contemporarily jazz... its nothing but a sack of fighting cats yowing to a rhythym

Yeah I know I've said I'm deaf... I'm actually hard of hearing and use two hearing aids with which I can enjoy music.

Thanks, Welsh. Everything you guys have recommended thus far has been really great, but the thing is I still haven't found exactly what I was looking for, and it's getting kind of frustrating... I never thought It'd be this hard to find it...

What is the area of usage for this very, very dark blues that you're speaking of?

Drawing the conclusion that you're more or less satisfied with previous recommendations, I wouldn't guess it's for the 'ol fashion listening [...]

Otherwide you wouldn't search for this darker blues.
