REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS - News) today announced an agreement with Elevation Partners to acquire VG Holding Corp. -- the owner of both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios. This acquisition gives EA a strong competitive position in key genres in interactive entertainment: action, adventure and role-playing games. The two studios have been recognized for creating some of the highest-quality games in the industry.

BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios have ten franchises under development, including six wholly owned games. BioWare Corp. is currently developing the highly anticipated Mass Effect, which will be published by Microsoft in November, and is in the early development stages of a massively multiplayer online game. Pandemic Studios is redefining open-world games with its upcoming Mercenaries 2: World in Flames(TM) and Saboteur(TM), in addition to several unannounced projects.

Pandemic Studios and BioWare Corp. employ roughly 800 people across four studios located in Edmonton, Canada; Los Angeles; Austin; and Brisbane, Australia.

I don't think Bioware are producers of real RPG classics, but I've always enjoyed their games. What can be said? It hella sucks.

This is webarticle about this whole thing. I sincerly hope this is a scam and rumour, but these days you never know. I'm sure that EA Games will be closing Bioware down in 5-6 years time after they've milked Bioware for every profit they can.

The good doctors can now laugh all the way to the bank - sitting in the taxi they've taken to the dark side.

Also, bye bye Dragon Age :(

well they we're gettin more and more streamlined (read dumbed and formulaic) .. now we dont have to witness them be the EA of RPGs .. they'll just be EA

It's an official announcement, not a rumour. It can't be a scam, that's fraud.

I'm just appaled, and taken aback by this news since it really came out of the blue. But Patrick Weekes did confirm that's this is true in a thread over rpgwatch

(look at the # 11 post )

I don't know if there's justice in the world, but I feel that Bioware had deserved another fate than this. I'm pretty sure that EA during the next 5-10 years will find an excuse to axe Bioware - after EA has gotten every profit it can take from Bioware.

I still fear for the fate of Dragon Age as well as for the Sonic RPG.
I don't fear for NWN2 or any Neverwinter Nights game as Atari currently holds the D&D license from Hasbro who owns Wizards of the Coast who owns TSR who owns the D&D franchise. And Lucasarts own the KOTOR IP.

Apparently, greed is still go(o)d and money (still) makes the world go around. I just thought that the good doctors at Bioware had more integrety than to sell out to the evil emp, eh. I mean EA.

edit:
Yes, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk are the two founders of Bioware who know have sold their firm, Bioware, to EA. Frankly, I thought they both had more integrity than selling out to the highest bidder - for love for sale.

Do all of you know some horrible secret about EA that I don't?

Is this some sort of repeating trend, of them buying businesses and killing them?

the trend is buying up businesses, bleeding them dry and then dropping people into brainless game production cubbicles where they work slavelabour hours.

though i doubt that'll happen with Bioware, but still. with that kind of corporate culture, you're fucked.

if you want to know how bad EA is, look up the demise of OSI.

i havent bought an EA title since like U9.

i cancelled my UO accounts because of how bad EA had made it.

Easy:

- Bullfrog
- Westwood
- Origin
- Looking Glass (1 simulator cancelled and SS2 released without any support and promotion)

And check the last titles from EA in the last 8 years, or compare Fifa 2008 in PC and consoles.

I was aware that EA was shit, but I didn't know they helped towards the demise of looking glass
